Swingarm adjustment markings

Do you guys use the alignment markings on the swingarm to check alignment or use a tape measure from a point on the swingarm to the axle. I vaguely remember a post, which I think it stated that the swingarm markings were inaccurate. Is this true?

swing-arm markings are accurate on the 800
