Removing handle car end caps

I need help removing the bar ends caps on my 96 800. It was a phillips screw on the end caps, tried using a manual impact driver, the next step will be a electric impact driver. Before I move on to that, I have read differing threads, some saying it is right handed threaded, some saying it's left handed threaded, which is correct?
Another post suggests to use a wrench on the end cap and take it off. Does that mean the phillips screw does not need to be removed first?

I've never taken my end caps off so don't know, you mean the chrome caps on the handle bar grips? I looked at my '05 and it doesn't have a screw on the end caps, if yours has a screw then I would try removing it counter-clockwise. I would think that screw would need to be removed first. If all else fails, grind the sucker off.
