Clutch issue

Hi! I have been searching but not finding anything but I recently got a 2002 Vulcan 800 that was totaled due to getting laid down on its side (not by me). I have everything back to normal but the clutch. When I am in gear and pull the clutch in, should it not take it out of gear like every other bike I had? That's my problem. Pull the clutch in and I'm still in gear. Found that out the day I tried to start it and wasn't in neutral. I watched a ton of videos on how to adjust it. Someone suggested the cable might be bad so I just changed that and have been adjusting it with no change. Is it possible that something could have got knocked loose somewhere when it got wrecked? What I should look for? Thanks

Now after I rock it back and forth a few times with the clutch pulled in it will eventually free up

Wasn't getting anywhere with that. It would free up then if I let the clutch out or put it in neutral and back it would do the same thing. I worked it for about an hour

How comfortable are you at wrenching on your bike? If you're okay with digging in anywhere, great, otherwise the right answer is "take it to a shop".

Assuming you're good to do your own work, what steps have you performed so far?

I'm fine with working on it. So far all I have really done is changed the clutch cable and I adjusted it according to a bunch of videos I watched. Set a gap about 1/8 inch at the lever then I tried tweaking it around from there. Then I rocked it back and forth until it would free up and kept doing that. Started it up and let it run after I had it freed up. I was going to pull the cover off and see if I noticed anything but figured I would check in here before I did that. I was thinking maybe there was something that got knocked loose when it got wrecked because that's the side it got laid down on. But there was no damage to that area

I'd try what sfair mentioned, as more info = better.
Here's the direct link to the article he mentioned:

Their problem is a little different but they went ahead and dug into the engine more, which I think is going to be your next step, regardless.
