Embarrassing whine @ 30mph

I have a 2012 VV ABS with 300 mi. on it. At 30-32mph (and only at 30-32mph) there is a high pitched whine from the rear. It is louder than the exhaust and is embarrassing. Any ideas are appreciated.

+2. Loosen the belt to 1/4" deflection at 10 lbs pressure. Fixed the same situation on my Voyager.

My belt whine sounded like a low note on a brass horn around 15 to 20 mph.

Belt whine would still be my first guess.
Those things come super tight from the factory.

It probably wont cause any issues, but I would tell the service tech about the sound at the 600 mile service and ask about belt tension.

I read your other posts too.

If there is a loss of power; that would concern me a lot! I would call the dealer. Can you tell us what your coolant gauge reads?

I had a tapping sound at idle when the engine was warm. I think changing to synthetic at 2k miles cured my issue. (I have done other mods too though)

I would have the dealership perform the 600 mile service; this will strengthen your side in warranty claims.

After the 600 mile service, I would add 2 ounces of seafoam to the oil; ride 100 miles, then switch to (motorcycle specific) synthetic oil, using a K&N oil filter.
I would also do this oil change MYSELF.

I would flush the coolant and replace with a 70/30 water to coolant ratio and use a couple of ounces of water wetter.

Getting more free flowing pipes and a fuel controller (PCV 5) helped to cure the EPA lean condition and let my engine run cooler too.

I will say that my Voyager had some operating temperature issues when I bought it.
A small amount of money and time on the oil change made a significant difference.
A little more money on pipes and the PCV 5; made the bike pure joy.

Temp gauge is always between the 2 highest white marks. I have already ordered my engine ice and water wetter. I was planning on switching to synthetic oil at 600 mi. And adding "the big 3" mods. At 1,000 mi.

Agrsiv, like Scott I would be much more concerned with the loss of power. The rear end whine could be as simple as the drive belt being to tight or it could be dry bearings in the rear wheel hub which would explain the feeling of loss of power, either way with less than 300 miles on it I would be waiting at the front door of the dealership with it the next time the doors opened.


P.S. Don't give up on the VV yet it may need a little tweaking but they are great bikes.
