Opinions: Avon Cobras on a 1700

I have MC IIs on the bike now. Just over 16K miles on them and should get at least a couple of thousand more before I get to the wear bars. I'm looking to trade off a little mileage for a little better wet grip, but I don't want something that wears out at 6K miles like Bridgestones did.

I have been searching the forum and found lots of threads from folks who put Avon Cobras on and really like them, but almost no comments about how many miles anyone has gotten out of them. I've seen a few comments stating that the writer has seen comments about how well they wear. A lot of comments go like "I have 5K miles on them and they haven't worn at all." No first hand comments about how many miles anyone actually got out of a rear tire or a set, except one person commented that you could expect 12k - 16k miles on a rear tire. No comparison to what the same rider got with other tires on the same bike.

Apparently, most folks who have tried them like the way they grip and the general feel.

So what I'm asking for is for folks who have used Cobras until they wore out (down to the wear bars? till the belts started showing?) to comment. What kind of mileage did you get out of them and what other tires have you tried (and wore out) that you can compare the mileage to?

Thanks!

Thanks! Just to clarify, you got 33,000 km on one rear tire? How many did you get out of the stock rear?

I mis-read your first post and thought that you had gone thru 2 cobras in that 33k km, not that you had just put the 2nd cobra on the rear. 33k km ain't bad! That's almost 20k miles. 7200 miles on the stock Bridgestones sounds normal for them. Thanks!

That which does not kill me tends to really piss me off.

But what do you have to compare to? YOU might only get 8k - 10k out of Avons. As I said, I expect to get at least 18k out of my MCIIs. Probably closer to 20k. Riding style, load, psi, etc. all come into play. That's why I want more than one person's experience with Avons and also experience vs. other brand tires (especially MCIIs) on the same bike.

Well I do ride the piss out of it. But since I've been happy with the Commander's I haven't changed them. The owner before me had Dunlop song which I did not like but they were halfway out when I got the bike

I'm finishing my first rear Cobra. I got 12K miles and got to the tire wear mark. it could take probably 1-2K more until bald but since I hit a nail I will replace it soon, I plugged the hole and so far so good...
I had the Michelin Commander II before, got 23K miles and probably had another 1-2K left but I changed because I had to do a 3K miles trip and prefer to start with a new tire.
I feel like the Cobra has better grip than the Michelin, but you have to take in account that the Cobra is Radial and Michelin is Bias.
I'm going back to MCII.
