mine does the same error code 18. I shut it down and wait a few seconds and restart it. Goes away for a few days. Book says to replace ECU as last resort but not at 800.00 plus. When it restarts ,and I ride it, it runs the same as (no light) normal.Could be a quirk in the system. No symtons other than flashing light once every few days.I wonder if it has anything to do with the recall We all had.

Yeah, I could see replacing the ECU as a last resort but surely the book gives some troubleshooting steps prior to that?

My 2011 vaquero has done it twice now. The first time was back in June. I recycled the ignition switch and it went away. I took it to the dealer to check out several days later and they said they just cleaned the throttle valve sensor under the seat and reconnected it.

Then this morning starting to go to work, it did it again. I again cut the ignition off and on and it went away.

Bike had the error code 18 appear first thing this morning when i started my vaquero. I tuned the ignition off and back on. No problems. I had my 7500 mile service a few weeks ago and the tech said he ran a diagnostics check on the bike and the computer never even showed the code had appeared. He made a note in my record about it in case i have a problem later on.

Has anyone come up with a cause or solution for this anomaly?

My 2009 Nomad has done the same thing. Last year when it kept doing that the dealer also put it on the computer. It showed nothing. They cleaned the throttle body and all was fine. It showed up again a couple weeks ago. Twice. I took it upon myself to clean the TB as it isn't hard. I also pulled the wires off of the APS and TPS and also the air sensor. I spray them all with electronic cleaner and haven't had it appear since then. Was that the cause??? I have no idea. All I know is my 2004 Nomad with FI never had problems that we are finding with these 1700's. I do know that we all seem to be having the same types of problems and no one can figure it out completely. I bet they think we are making this up. LOL
I have the service manual and the trouble shooting in it isn't very good in these cases except to check voltages and such. Oh I have done that to. What a pain that is. The voltages check out good too.

heres an update for mine. First off, can't say enough good for both Kawi. custimer service and my dealer. The customer service rep. (Nathan) was very receptive to my calling about error code 18 popping up. He said he would talk to the technical service guys there and call me back. Guess what, he did a couple of days later. Said they belived it's a combination of 2 things on my bike. One is to clean the throttle body and second is to check on a sticky throttle cable. Nathan also made a note of my calls for future reference.
My dealer was great about doing just what they suggested. In fact the dealer asked me back to the service area to show me exactly what they did and why and showed me their service manual recomendations. Showed me how to clean the TB as well.
On my bike there was a little build up in the TB. ( I strongly suspect its mostly due to the terrible gas (or should i say corn) we have around these days.) Also if you trace the throttle cable to the side of the TB (i'm not a mechanic as you can tell so bear with my less than technical references) it was dry around the spring mechanism so they lubed it up. Seems to have done the trick.

Bottom line. Sensor did what it was supposed to do. Minor cleaning and no worries.
