Buying advice

Looking to upgrade from a Vn 800 to either a 2010 1700 Nomad or possibly a Voyager.
Found a dealer with a new 2010 Nomad and wants 12k out the door.
Is that a decent price?
Also has a 2010 1700 classic for 9k.
Is it cheaper to turn a classic into a nomad or voyager?
Will I later want to upgrade again to a Voyager?
Found a 2010 Voyager/abs for 13700 w/3100 miles.

Torn as to which way to go...

Well naturally I'm going to say get the Voyager, as I have had this one for three years now. I'm very happy with it because it was just what I wanted. So you need to ask yourself what do you want in a bike? A sporty look with hardly any storage or a full-fledged touring bike with lots of storage and has all the bells and whistles. If you think you are interested in a heavy touring bike with all the bells and whistles then there's no question about it, get the Voyager. You won't regret it unless you're solely interested in a smaller bike with the same engine.

Think about how you will use the bike, where you will ride and what you may want to take with you.

Do you prefer the looks of one over the other?

I live in Australia so year round riding and warm weather most of the time I prefer no fairing but that also limits the extra's like a a radio CB etc.

Unless you want to personalise your ride by "building your own voyager" with bags, fairings etc a standard voyager is a sweet bike.

The difference in prices you have quoted would also enable you to accessories a classic to your own tastes and requirements.

I would go with the abs Voyager over what you have listed. You can add just about everything to the classic except the abs. I have a 09 Voyager that I moved up to from a 900LT. My only real problem with the Voyager is the insane amount of heat that motor puts out and there are plenty of threads on that subject.

I have a 2010 Voyager and owned a 2009 Nomad. They might share the same drivetrain, but they are truly different bikes IMO. Of course money can change anything, but IMO the Nomad is a very classic motorcycle with an 'old school' look and feel. That bike got a lot of attention wherever I went. Great local riding bike, but I wouldn't want to tour day after day on it.

The Voyager is a beast of a bike. I have over 30,000 miles on mine. A great bike for long distance riding, but I wouldn't own it if all my riding was around town. This bike needs the open road for it to run.

I rode a Nomad for over 60,000 miles. I have put 25,000 on Voyagers. If you are going to do local riding, the Nomad is a great bike. I did take long trips on the Nomad with a trailor behind it, but since the Voyager came out, I have ridden it and can take long trips without the need for a trailer. The Voyager is hard to beat for all the comforts on the highway.
