So the book says if I remove the filter and both drain bolts, I should fill the bike with 4.5qts...I did that a week ago...now I have finished adding the last qt of Amsoil because when checking oil as described in the owner's manual, and the repair manual, I was only getting about a quarter inch of oil to show up on the very tip of the dip stick thing...just barely over the low mark. WTH?
Just now switched to amsoil, the bike has a little over 4500 miles on it I believe this is the 3rd oil change, dealership did one around 600 miles, then i did the first service around 2500 miles...had 2500 miles on the oil when I switched to amsoil, and sent a sample of my kawi oil in to Black Stone Labs for analysis...anyone else done this? , and seems to run hot, where does yall's coolant temp dial read when sitting at a light for 4 minutes?
My temp dial will be almost pegged out when sitting that long. It runs just below half on normal riding in 85 or so degree weather. I'm going to wrap the pipes next week so I'll see how much that helps.
I had my first oil change by the dealer at 600 also and planned to do the next one at 5,000. Any reason you did yours at 2500?
With a new filter, my vaquero takes 5 gts. My bike seems to be running a little cooler with AMSOIL 10w40 synthetic. But if i sit in traffic 4-5 minutes in 80 degrees or so, my temp guage will go to the hot side. It's juts the guage and not a refelction (IMO) the bike is running excessively hot. It always goes down immediately when under way.
Go by the oil stick and method in the manual. I've overfilled my 1700 and got a surprise in air box via crankcase breather vomit. Mine takes about 4.6 qt of 10w40 Mobil 1 when changing and replacing the filter.
My new Vaquero is currently at 2300 miles and I've now done 7 oil/filter changes, I'm a big believer in proper break in and frequent changes during the early miles, I'm using the slightly longer than stock ST7317 oil filter and I'm using 5.3 quarts to set the oil lever at the top of the hash marks on the stick... My temp gauge would also be near the top if I let her sit that long also...
I keep reading your posts where you show that you are using a special break in technique...just hurts my wallet to think you dropped oil that many times already...After 200 miles on my amsoil, it isn't even black yet...

5.3qts. w/filter. as fas as the temp thing my temp gauge reads in the middle while riding and when stopped at a light it may creep up a couple of marks. my oil temp stick says 180 degrees.
i read an article online and i think it was motorcycle.com where they too were concerned about the temps. after some research with kawasaki and the bike it was determined that it was just the gauge that was reading this high. in other words i think its just the way the gauge is calibrated.

I get more popping when the bike is past halfway on the heat...I also notice that the bike is slower off the line, and doesn't seem to pull as hard through the gears...once I get on the highway and the temp gets below the middle mark, it has power again...anyone else notice this?
Anyone else adjust their belt to give it some more play?

Power issue at higher engine temps seems to be normal for this bike. Everybody says Ivanizing takes care of it.
I loosened my belt up a bit right after I bought the bike. I never liked how tight they set it on my 900 so handle the Vaq the same way I did on the 9er.
This has been discussed before for the Voyager (same applies to the Vaquero) - the overall consensus was 5 qts when you replace the filter. When I use 5 qts, it's perfect.
About the Temp Gauge. Unless yours is broken the gauge is very accurate.
Here are the temp values in Fahrenheit by tick mark:
Tick
1. 120F
2. 140F (thermostat opens 143F)
4. 160F
5. 180F (middle tick)
6. 200F (fan kicks in just above this tick @ 204F)
7. 220F
H1. 240F
H2. 250F
Don't confuse oil temp vs. coolant temp. The coolant circulates thru the heads only. The oil flows thru the whole engine.
I use an Oil Temp Dip Stick from Madcorider to monitor the temp of my engine oil, and it averages most days while going down the road at 180 degrees, might creep up to 200 when in stop and go traffic, the temp gauge on the dash will show the coolant temp around 160 going down the road and maybe up to about 200 in stop and go traffic.
I have 20,588 on my 2016 vaquero and replacing the oil for the 4th time. Running mobile vtwin 20-50 and live in Texas. I put the 4.5 qts in then double check after riding. Haven't had to add any additional in the 7500 mile intervals. 100+ temp at times. The temp gauge climbs at stops but drops back down when moving.

is easier using a PC vs the app. This will help others answer questions you may ask knowing what year and model bike you have.
You're adding to a very old thread Steve... element80 doesn't own that bike any more, and Ivanizing had never been heard of when he did. He last visited in here about 5 years ago.
I do this a lot. There was a new post on the thread 3 days ago. I hadn't read the post before so I started at the top and never looked at the post dates. I guess I'm just not ready for these new fangled computer thingies. ?
