Steering head bearing replacement

Well I to took Blue out for a short spin a few weeks ago and it felt really stiff turning so I decided to go and check the steering head bearings, here is what I found and decided it was time to replace them. I went with the tapered roller bearing I seen a lot of folks switching to. The top bearings looked OK but why leave them if I am switching out the bottom ones. ,,



I did it without taking everything off the front end, put new bearing on and put it all back together, then realized I made a bad opps in doing so and haven't corrected it yet still sitting jacked up in the garage, I got one brake line going over the stem and one going under and need to take the front end back off and reroute the brake lines so they are both going over the stem.

Next project flush cooling system... When it finally warms up here in Ohio..Also got to looking at the underside of the front fender and see chips and specks of rust and was thinking about getting some of the Rhino liner for truck beds and possibly spraying that on the front and back fenders to help with road debris chips, so if anyone has any thoughts to that I would love some feedback.

I'd be interested to know how many miles also. I repacked mine at 30,000 or so and still fine at 50,000 miles.

Did the bike sit out in the rain a lot?

Its a 2009 Voyager, and roughly 22,000 miles. Didn't sit out any more than needed while out riding, always kept it in the garage or under cover...

I've changed mine out too, and am very pleased with the result. The bike feels much more stable all the time, and the small head-shake it had under deceleration at "around town" speeds has entirely gone.

Bought a 75 Harley Sportster off a guy a couple years back and both top and bottom bearings were frozen and rusted to the races. Would not turn at all but you could bump it into a changed position. I changed both of the races and both bearings in it. He must have stored it under a rain pipe drain or something as they were both totally destroyed. I have seen rusted stuff on a lot of things but never heard too much about it on new stuff unless it was abused and left out to get wet all the time. Wonder what made yours get gaulded up so fast and that bad in a short time if well taken care of like yours was?

How did you get new races in there without taking the front end off?

I pulled everything to repack the bearings, but I believe it is good to pull the bike down every now and then to make sure everything is clean inside and out and all the fasteners are at the proper torque.

WOW! That's some kind of nasty!

Mine looked brand new when I went to grease them around 20k miles.
Too bad I pinched them and cracked the plastic cage.

I went with All Balls tapered for replacement.

Were the races rusted too?

Only the bottom race and bearing looked bad... top looked good just not enough grease for my liking, not sure if the original owner kept the scooter dry or not, the bottom rubber grommet was kind of rusty too.

TWA I should have said I didn't take the faring off yes I did take the front end off, kinda looks like a skidoo without the front wheel and forks attached.

How much water gets thrown up there when riding in the rain? I mean obviously you have fenders, but water has a way of finding it's way into things when you're moving. Not gonna stop be from riding in bad weather but definitely going to have to keep a close eye on parts like that!
