Exclamation My $200 nail!

Hi Everyone!

Merry Christmas!

Remember how I got 32,800 miles on my last Michelin Commander II tire? The replacement tire that I just put on of the same kind? Not so much!! 531 miles. I was checking the bike out to make sure everything was good before going on a 500 miles trip to south Florida this past weekend when I saw this thing sticking out of my brand new rear tire. It was shoved in so far that the red rubber stuff was plugging the tire so I rode it 26 miles in to the dealership. The location on the tire was on the very outside edge of the tread radius which meant that you just can't safely plug it.

So, $185 for a new tire plus taxes, balancing beads, and tire disposal fee rounds it to $209. So I'm calling this my $200 nail! I actually think it's the things they use to mount the reflectors in the road surface as there some sort of brass on the head and cross hatching under the red rubber stuff.

Thank god I was smart and responsible and checked the bike all over before getting on the road for this trip. Price of a new tire $200 but peace of mind? PRICELESS!!!!

Have a happy, safe, holiday season everyone!

JB

When I went on vacation last summer, meant up with group doing a benefit ride. One guy had new tire mounted the night before so could do this ride. Rode tge bike from shop to home, then out for breakfast that morning where we all meant. On way from there to start of ride, he hit something on the rode, we were doing 70mph on 4 lanes each way, and put fist size hole in sidewall of new rear tire, less than 30 miles total. SUCKS! He did safely get to the side of tge road and stopped, thankfully.

At least you were home and could get it done. I've bought tires on trips that were the right size, but not the right tire for the type of bike I was riding.

I have two on the bike I currently own that I purchased for 10 bucks each because they had a drywall screw in each of them. I put a vulcanized patch inside them over the hole then back on the rims and they have over 6000 on them now since they were repaired. I also have a brand new tire on my new Impala that got a nail in it and they told me a new one would cost me around 350.00 for a new one for it. I passed and had a guy take it off the 18 inch rim and I put a vulcanized patch over the hole and now have over 12000 miles on that tire. I have done this all my life and if you know how to put a good radial patch on a tire you can repair yours also. A tare or bad cut in a tire then I would toss it but just a puncture just patch them.

Same thing here with the front tire. Glad I had towing coverage and the shop was able to replace it the same day.

Man that sucks.
I have to pass a commercial centre to get to the road from my place, and one of the shops is a carpet showroom. I have to go past their skips, and always have to check for stray nails first, usually sweep every other day just to make sure, as I've already had a 200 carpet nail myself.
