mobile 1 20/50 in cold weather

Getting ready to change my oil. I live in missouri and will probably ride some during the winter. I am planning on taking an early spring trip to Colorado next year. I love the way mobile 1 20/50 full synthetic has performed in my other bikes (first oil change on the 2011 vn1700. Should I avoid the 20/50 until summer?

20/50 is too thick in cold weather.

10w-40 will serve the engine better when the temps drop.

10W40 is all you will ever need year round. It's what Kawasaki says to use why use something different? Do some research and you will find less MPG and performance with 20w50.

I am thinking about going to 10w40 this winter. I mostly ride the bike when the temps stay 70 or below. No issues with 20w50 for the past 30,000 miles.

20w50 is good down to 32 degrees F. I do run the bike when some mornings are in the mid 20s.

Since 20w-50 is "thicker" than 10w-40 at all operating and ambient temps there are disadvantages in using it when the temps get low.

I AM NOT SAYING YOU CAN'T OR SHOULD NOT USE IT!!! It is on of many allowable viscosities Kawi lists.

Some disadvantages are...it'll take longer for the oil to reach all internal engine components upon start up; since it takes engine power to turn the oil pump and pump the oil thru the engine, you will have a power loss with 20w-50 as compared to 10w-40; shifting may be improved with 10w-40; mpg will be improved with 10w-40.

As we are now into our great mild weather here in So Fla and no prospect of 90+ dg temps, my last oil change was with 2 quarts 10w-30 with the rest 10w-40. Better mpg and performance. I will go back to 10w-40 in June when our temps rise.
