Synthetic Oil

I was looking at mobil 1 and amsoil and I was wondering what weight of oil people are using and how long you go between oil changes?

Hey 900....Just put Amsoil in the bike Wed the 7th. I put in 10-40 motorcycle blend synthetic along with an Amsoil filter. The bike has 3100 miles on it, bought it new last year, and have riden 250 miles since the oil and filter change, and the bike seams to run "smoother". That's the only way I can describe it, just smoother. A friend at my work is an Amsoil dist and I got it at cost, so it was a really good deal and I think, IMHO, better for the bike. I will keep it in all this season and see where I am at in October. By the way I have a 08 Classic LT, blue and silver, with my new Mustang seat. "SWEET" and other chrome goodies.
Let me know if I, or we can be of any more help.

Most 900 riders use 10-40 because of climate regions, 10-40 is great in colder to moderate heat conditions, some that live in very hot areas tend to use 20-50 for the heat protection.

I live in Texas where the heat gets up to 105 on a regular basis in the summer and I have not experienced any overheating with 10-40 so chose the rating for your weather conditions.

Time between oil changes varies with each rider, My self i use a synthic and run about 5000 between oil changes but change the filter at 2500. Some change oil every 2500.

Using Mobil 1 Vtwin, my local Wallyworld carries it. 10-40 till late June and then swap to 20-50 till the weather cools off. We usually have a week or two where the temps get over 100 and sometimes over 110 while morning temps are mid 60's. That's over 10-40 range but not 20-50 range.

I believe the synthetics to be superior to Dino oil but KNOW that either oil needs to be changed and clean so that it can do it's job. Just keeping current on oil changes will vastly improve the life of your engine even more than swapping to Synthetic over dino.

I'm using Rotella T 10-40 and it gets changed about every 1,000 miles. This is also the 5th brand of oil I've tried and it seems to behave better - no strange noises, no clunking, smoother shifting. Whenever I change the oil in one of the cages I also change the bike oil.

I've tried them all exept for maybe a few. Came to find out it really doesn't make a difference between syntetic or regular. Just make sure you use 10-40 as recomended. I once went with 20-50 and engine and tranny became so noisy after 1000 miles i went back to 10-40.

they say [a few local motorcycle mechanics] that the amsoil syn when tested after 7500miles in a vtwin, comes out 'as new' regarding its initial vital properties. with that in mind, i guess its a matter of how often you plan to change your oil...

ps i have used both dino and syn, and for what i can tell, there's no difference in the way my vulcan runs.
