Review - Mustang Wide Seat & 10" Apes for 6'1 rider

Hi. I've been reading on the forums since april of this year and have everyone to thank here. I just bought a 2012 vulcan 900 at the time.

I thought I would post a review of my riding experience as I came from a 2004 Honda Spirit 1100. That bike sat a bit higher, and had small ape\chopper style bars that fit my long legs/arms 6'1/200lb frame very well! I sold the bike in 2008 and when it came time to get another one this year, I knew I would probably have to customize the bike to my riding style as most seem to be lower than my old spirit and have lower hand positions.

The first issue was after a month, I like most realized the stock seat was simply "brutal" for more than 30-40 minutes. So I sat on a corbin, saddlemen and ended up with the Mustang wide vintage touring. It was firmer, but it keeps my back straight and it is great for long drives. I can see why folks sear by these.

As to my frame, it fixed an issue where it raised me enough to let my legs/knees level out a bit on the bike - which was huge benefit. It felt only slightly forward to me, don't even notice it anymore and again, just slightly. But unfortunately it caused some discomfort in my arms. They now felt like they were lower and tight turns felt more laborious.

I researched for weeks and ended up with a cost effective fix. I got some 10" mini-apes from J&P, part no. 500-839. They fit with no rerouting of cables and plenty of room with the stock classic risers. They brought my arms up just right for my frame. Also got what feels like a tighter turning radius as they are not quite as wide as the stock bars.

Two hours is no issue with me now, and the bike finally feels like it "fits" me. Just thought I would share my impressions of this setup, very cost effective for me.

Some pics of the setup, again been lurking for quite awhile and thought I would post up a review.

Thanks for the review and the pictures! I just been talkin to a buddy on the forum about a set of mini apes, and he suggested the 10"ers! Really look good on your bike. Are you leaning forward at all when you ride? Sometimes it's hard to tell just looking at the bike how the riding position would be... thanks again for the review!

I don't feel like I'm leaning forward at all - feels comfy, upright to me and I can lean back when I want to. The mustang seat keeps my back straighter, and I have a long frame to begin with so that is probably why. I'll see if I can get a friend to take pics with me on it later this week.

I know it's probably hard to be precise, but what would you say was the amount of rise over the stock bars? And, did you pull them back from the stock bar position? I was surprised to hear you had no issue with the cables. Are they tight when you turn fully in one direction or the other? And how about installation? Was it fairly easy to remove the controls and remount them?

This looks like it may be a great alternative to the Baron Kickback risers I'm been thinking about. I started riding again with a 2007 Yamaha 250 (which is REALLY small) and it had similar "ape hanger" type bars. Of course, the entire bike is much smaller so I had no reach problems but I did like the style of the bars and they were much narrower than the stock V900 bars as well.

I'll be very curious to see the pictures of you on the bike also. Do you have a fair amount of elbow bend the way you use them? Thanks!

Its a handful of inches taller, but they are not as wide so that is where I made up the slack on the cables. I did a fair bit of research, found this link posted on another thread on this site that has specs....

I got the stock specs for the bars I have now. Here they are compared to the part number on J&P cycles web site...

Stock
Bar Diameter: 1"
Height: 7"
Width: 34"
Pullback: 14"
Center 6.5"

JP Chrome 10" 500-839
Bar Diameter: 1"
Height\Rise: 10"
Width: 32.5"
Pullback: 7"
Center: 8"

The width gives me some room and so does the fact that the pull back isn't as much. I wear a 34/35 sleeve shirt if that helps put the length of my arms into perspective. I will try to get pics later.

Cables are not tight at all, and was able to keep them in stock position. I've made full turns with no issues. There is a pin on the throttle that you are supposed to hole punch and then drill into the new bars so it locks into place. I have not done that yet but have the bolts so tight they don't move. But will get to it next weekend.

Removing the controls was easy, even getting the clutch side grip wasn't bad. The hardest part was the bolts on the risers, needed to get a fair bit of leverage to pry them loose.

I just ordered this seat for my 900 Classic last night. The fiancÚ and I went on a 53 mile ride with over 700 bikes yesterday. My ass was screaming by the time we finished and I told her that I wouldn't blame her one bit if she never wanted to do anything like that again. She just laughed and told me to order a new seat, so I did. I went with the Mustang because I have never heard anything but good about them, and all of the reviews I read were extremely positive. I have been eyeballing this seat for a long time, but yesterday was the straw that broke the camel's back. I normally go on rides that are longer than 50 miles, and the stock seat does get very uncomfortable, but yesterday was the worst it has ever been. It should be here on Wednesday, so I'll let you guys know my impressions.
