Risers

I know someone made risers on this forum but cant fine the thread. I have a 900 custom. How do the risers attach to the bars and triple tree? What is the thread and size of the stock threads.

Spence,

I also have a custom and every thread that talks about DIY risers ends up not on a custom. I haven't taken mine apart but I believe that there are studs welded to the bottom of the bars which are then held on by nuts under the triple tree. The only risers that I have found for the custom are the ones form Scootworks. Someone had shown a picture of some by Genmar but when I inquired of them, the ones they pointed out were not for the custom. Good luck and I hope you are successful because I would like to do the same.

I don't believe there're any home made risers for the custom yet. I agree with Sailor Bill, I think most of the threads end up been for classics.

I made a set for my 500. They are documented in a thread in that forum. https://www.vulcanforums.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=4679

According to the Kawasaki parts page the 500 mounting mechanism is the same as the 900 custom. There are 10mm x 1.25 studs mounted in the handlebars that attach with flanged nuts under the top triple clamp.

It was pretty easy to make the risers from T6 6061 aircraft aluminum. The hardest part was threading them.

Give me a shout if you would like more info.

Great info!
According to scootworks web both the 900 custom and the vn500 use the same part number so they are the same.

Thanks for the help. Is it M10-1.25 H6 thread size?

here is my plan over all but the od and length are not finalized.

I am planing on using aluminum T6 6061 but do I need it to be aircraft aluminum? I know normal is strong enough but i don't know if it will polish the same.

spencea15,

6061 in T6 temper is aircraft aluminum as far as I know, and it is what Scootworks says they use. You should be fine with it. It will polish like chrome if you are patient. I get all my metal from Online Metal. They specialize in small-quantity orders for hobbyists and the like. Great prices, and you don't have to by a 6 foot rod when all you need is 6 inches.

You may need a deeper recess to allow for the shoulder on the studs in the handlebars. Mine were almost .5" long.

I don't know about the H6 threadform. I just bought a 10mmx1.25 tap off the shelf at the hardware store and it seems to have worked. I used grade-5 flange-head bolts (10mm-1.25 x 1.25") that I picked up at the same time.
