Clutch not releasing

Hi all, looking for a little help. I just replaced the stator on my 07 900 classic. wasn't to tough but now my clutch wont release.

all the following done with the bike still off and have not re-filled oil. after putting it all back together the bike did not want to roll when in gear and the clutch lever engaged. when it is in neutral it rolls fine however while in gear and with the clutch lever depressed it still feels/sounds like i am fighting the engine to roll the bike.

the only 2 thoughts i have is after re installing the left side cover i removed the small metal plate and rotated the motor with a ratchet to ensure the stator wasn't dragging. i did rotate this bolt clockwise. could this have tightened the clutches up preventing them from releasing? also could the clutches just not want to turn because there is no oil in the tranny?

the bolt turned is the one on the right bronze in color.

all suggestions would be appreciated. ive worked on cars but am new to the bikes so im trying not to screw anything up.

thanks
Nick

I'm no expert here and a recent stator recipient, I never turned the motor with a wrench. The clutch should nit tight up with engine rotation. I would double check the cable near the right side rear and see if you see any movement.

I looked at the manual and I can't see how you may have tightened anything unless rotating in the wrong direction may have caused a problem. There would be enough residual oil on the clutch not to cause any friction issues unless you ran the motor with out oil which you have not done it appears.

Sorry I got nothin!

Do you feel any problems when shifting? Like is it hard to get in gear or in neutral. I would add the oil and loosing up the cluth cable by using the screw at the top. Give about 1/8 inch play between the lever and the stop and see if this makes any difference. You can then adjust to factory specs. I do not see like Morningstar said any way you could have caused a problem by rotating the engine.

I have had this happen when working on bikes that have not been ran for quite awhile. I would bet that the lack of oil is causing the problem. I would fire it up and work the clutch lever a bit. Shut it down and try it right after. Or if you want you can just plant the front wheel against the wall and once the oil has circulated and you have worked the lever, drop it into gear and see what happens. I have also had my bikes surge and stall when I first drop them into gear when they are cold.
I say fill the oil and you should be fine.

filled her up with oil and let her warm up. the sound from the stator is gone which is nice and it seemed to be ok once it warmed up when put into gear. got better as it warmed up so it was probably just cold.

like i said i would rather be cautious seeing i am new to working on the bike.

thanks for the help.
