Vn900 issues

Hi, recently got a 2009 vn900, 50k on the clock , full dealer service history, well looked after. Today suddenly no charge in the battery. Bump started and carried on riding, then had intermittent speedo. Can’t really see that they are related. Half hour later the indicators were flashing week...isn’t the alternator or such like supposed to put out enough volts / amps to power the electric circuit and charge the battery? No light on the instrument panel and I have no manual. Hopefully a dead battery or loose connection. Any advice welcome cheers

Yep engine SHOULD charge the battery and keep you going unless the charging system goes bad then your battery dies and your stranded.
BUT you were able to push start right?
If you have the repairs history look to see if the stator has been replaced.

BUT first find how old the battery is, if 3 years or more go get a new one.

Great thanks. Replaced battery as old was many years old. 11.6 volts didn’t even crank the engine. Surprised! New battery at 12.6v, on idle at 12.2, reviving engine made no difference do I guess I have a charging issue. I want to check the stator for grounding issues but I can’t find the damn connector with the three white wires!

So found the plug...under the radiator. Full of oil, cleaned it, no short to earth on any wire. Then started bike and tested voltage between each white wire and earth. All different but one reading was 3.6v when voltmeter was set to 20v, so 72v then ??

Correction; ohmmeter shows 0.03 when Leads touch each other so basically shorted out. Each white stator wire shows 0.03 between it and negative post on battery. So all three are sorted or it just takes one? Or my meter is shite????
