I can't give much feedback yet, as all of my stuff is still sitting in the garage but here's what I ordered a couple of weeks ago:

That mount might be a little bigger than what you're looking for but I can hide it behind my fairing. Another smaller GPS mount I considered was

Ram mounts are the way to go

We used the RAM ball-socket mounting method on my dad's Softail and it is a great system. Very little is left on the bike when you aren't using it, and you can get different holders for different items down-the-road. For simplicity, we chose this one:

He personally didn't like the handlebar clamp. This simply replaces a bolt with a ball-socket.

RAM mounts aren't THE prettiest, but they are darn solid. Another option would be to get a small leather tool bag on your handlebar and stick it in there.

Most modern mp3 players can be charged via USB, including an iPod, this is what I used:

It's mounted up underneath my fuel tank, and I also bought a kit they sell on JP cycles to turn any USB cable into a waterproof cable. Ziptied the cable to various hoses and cables under the bike and now I have a 'permanent' charger for my phone that provides GPS and audio for me, and all you see is the white cable coming out from under the tank in the middle and up to my phone.
