2011 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Vaquero vs. 2011 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Custom

The current crop of race-repli sportbikes isn't the only place you'll find closely matched motorcycles all vying for the attention and dollars of the same batch of customers. The cruiser world is starting to see its share of tit-for-tat, too.

Harley-Davidson remains the dominant force in all of cruiserdom in the U.S., especially so in the bagger scene. But starting only two years ago Victory Motorcycles stepped up its attack on its Midwestern neighbor when the Polaris Industries-owned company introduced the Cross Roads and Cross Country touring cruisers.

These Victory baggers zero in on Harley's Street Glide and Road King models. More brands want in on the action.

A quick glance of the new Kawasaki Vaquero, introduced the end of last year, reveals this new Kawi bagger is targeting Harley-Davidson's Road Glide Custom.

Both machines have prominent frame-mounted fairings that house robust sound systems, gauge packages, etc. Each bike also features locking hardbags and a long, low profile – or as much as a touring cruiser can appear long and low.

Whether or not Kawasaki would readily admit it, the Vaquero makes clear that Kawasaki, like Victory, wants a piece of Harley's big bagger pie.

Saw the Vaquero at the motorcycle show and more recently at my Kawasaki dealer. Very nice bike.

^^^^^^^^ I totally agree, when I bought my vn 900 classic (black), 2 weeks ago they had the new vaquero also in black, frickin gorgeous!!! But yet again the almighty dollar or lack there of won and I went with the 900 at more than half the price of the vaquero..... It was a real sweet bike though, so slick and I loved the blacked out version.

Sorry people, What ever the Metric companies do, They just can't beat the style and look of the company that has been putting out their machines for over 100 years. I like my 1500 Kawi, But would love to have a Harley. SORRY...

I've ridden plenty of Harleys. I'll keep my Vulcan, and put all the extra money in gas to travel.

Have been ridings since I was 16 and now am 63 and have had some of those highly over priced and over rated HDs in the past (decided to stop drinking the Kool Aid), no more, went to Yamaha back in the 90s and now on to the Vulcan and the Vaquero, one of the very best bikes that I have ever had.

I, will also keep my money out of repairs for the bike and put it into the high price of fuel that is out there these days.
