Vn900. Mixing brands on front & rear?

Just put a Dunlop d404 on the back and found a Maxxis M6103 130/90 -16 67H on eBay for half the price of the recommended Dunlop.
I'm in the U.K. and maxxis aren't a big brand here so can anyone tell me if they're any good and has anyone used them on a 900 classic?
I'm being advised by a sports bike rider that the maxxis will be harder than the Dunlop and not good to put harder tyres on the front.
My front tyres wear much quicker than the rear so my thinking was use a more hard wearing tyre on the front to even it up.
