life of a tyre

Hey all,
Wondering if anyone has links to or knows about the lifeof a tyre and I dont mean how many K's/miles it can travel..

The bike I have was in storage for a while before i got it from a family member. 1998 VN1500E Ive had it now 2 years fixing it up mechanically. I know that the rear tyre still has good tread on it hence my question. Is there a length of time a tyre will live for?.. does the rubber start to split?. Does it become too hard and therefore unsafe?

Im predominantly asking about the rear as the front is worn on the side so I will replace it first anyway.

I know that the rear should ideally be replaced...however its at least 85% tread left and I want to spend some money on other things.

Thanks guys.

7 years should be the limit for a tire. The following link explains how to tell when tire was produced. You count the 7 years from the manufactor date, not install date. Tire Manufacture Date: What is a Tire Date Code?- Sears

2005 800 classic
2012 Voyager ABS
