Rear tire locked up when shifting from1st to 2nd.

I have a 2004 Vulcan 900 classic. It won't go into neutral but the neutral light comes on, when I let out on the clutch it's in gear, and when I take off from 1st and go into 2nd it locks up the back tire. I have to rock the bike to get it unstuck. I push the bike about 10 feet and the back tire locked up again . I don't have a clue what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

The neutral light will only illuminate when the neutral position cam on the shift drum depresses the switch so if it's going on and off, the shift drum is moving. It sounds like you may have a bent shift fork just enough to allow it into multiple gears at the same time which will allow only a little rear tire rotation before binding things up to the point it can lock the tire. Has it been shifted hard from 1st to 2nd many times (or one time really bad)?

Don't know if you are still fighting with this problem but I would love to know what you have figured out because my vulcan 900 (2006) just started doing the same thing this morning. Absolutely identical as you describe it.

Did you figure out the cause?
