Cobra rust - no warranty!

I'm still in shock, but it is what it is. My 2017 Vaquero was fitted with Cobra Tri Flo slip-ons at the dealership before me taking delivery May of 2017. During my last cleaning, I saw that the mufflers looked like they had measles from all of the rust spots! Less than a year old, less than 6,000 miles. As my 2011 Vaquero has a set of Tri Flo mufflers with 68k+ mileage, I knew what Cobra quality was. and stuck with them for my new ride. I dutifully sent an email in to Cobra USA for a warranty claim, along with pictures. About a week later, I received a short phone call telling me that my claim was denied, that Cobra does not warrant against rust! Well, the rust is just a symptom of a bad plating job, which several folks that work in plating have pointed out to me. Apparently Cobra does not care! I asked for a response in writing/email from Cobra, but after a week, still nothing. I can only think of ONE REASON Cobra doesn't want to cover this. They have intentionally reduced quality and know that another set will just do the same thing! Unless you are just a fair-weather rider, I cannot recommend Cobra products anymore!

That's BS! What good is a warranty if its not respected, which is all too often the case these days. One of the reasons I never purchase the extended warranty on anything. As soon as you go to use it, they have some reason to get out of paying up. Sorry to hear about it with Cobra though, had thought they were one of the good ones.

Gone are the days we stop to decide where we should go, we just ride.

Hey, GOOD NEWS! Cobra reached out today, and made it clear that they are going to insure this issue is resolved! It seems that the latest information that I sent has tweaked their curiosity as well. Now we are on the road to determine exactly what is going on, and that is all I ever wanted. So, after all said and done, Cobra is standing behind their product! YAY!

FWIW my V&H Baggers are OLD and they still look great. Glad they are working with you for a solution.

Thumbs down

Well crap. Just got off the phone with Cobra. So after spending $125 to insure and ship the Tri Flos back, Cobra is sending the same ones back. They used WD-40 to clean them up (I told them I knew they would clean up, that isn't the point), repacked them and replaced the tips when they found flaking chrome! They suggest that I keep water spots off the mufflers. Excuse me? Yes, if you don't remove water spots within a day or two, they will cause the muffler to rust at that spot.
So my takeaway?
They know that there is no use in replacing them, as new ones would rust up just the same.
Cobra's plating is WAY inferior to what they used to produce.
With less than 6k and 1 year, the mufflers needed to be repacked and new tips due to flaking chrome, so overall quality is nothing like it used to be either.

At least I am getting something for my $125. Unless you are building a fair-weather low-mileage "show" bike, I highly suggest looking elsewhere. I certainly will, and it now appears that will be much sooner than I planned. I typically put on about 10k a year, so I doubt these will last long. Always a shame to see what was a top-quality manufacturer slowly circle down the crapper.

After the second year, this is what I saw when I removed the saddlebags. They are so bad now the chrome is actually peeling away from the muffler. The sponge I was using to wash with got loaded with little flakes of chrome as I washed them. And one of the new end caps that they replaced has a big bubble in it where it has separated from the base metal. Am I the only guy that DOESN'T REMOVE the saddlebags every time I wash the bike? Exactly how am I supposed to clean and then dry the mufflers (can't have any water spots!) otherwise? Am I supposed to take them off after riding in the rain to dry them? YES.

Or better yet, pick a better quality brand! From my experience, that would be ANYONE ELSE. As I can't afford new mufflers after buying these, I'll debaffle the stock mufflers and see how they sound.

I have Vance and Hines cruzers on my 800. I ride in all weather and the bike stays outside way more often than not. Even when I put it away it's just under a carport. The chrome looks great with no rust or blemishes other than the water marks that I never seem to get around to removing
