Rubber shaft boot

2005 nomad 1600 - Is the rubber shaft boot on the front of the drive shaft just a dust cover? Mine has a slight tear in it but I don't see any grease so I am assuming just a dust cover.

As far as I know it is you should be ok I took mine apart and greased it all up as it was looking dry.
