belt guard

A fellow rider on another site stated that the belt guard was trapping and funneling rocks to the pulley causing belt damage and that it should be removed. Thoughts?

Roads here are woefully poor so I had issues with small rocks wedging into the belt and actually had one punch right thru, making 9/16 hole in belt. (rode it like that for a bit and then got new belt) Then, I cut the inner part of the plastic guard out completely and have had no issues since. My theory was that the rocks were being thrown up and dropped by the D/S tire and the inner portion of the plastic guard deflected them onto the lower portion of the belt headed back to the driven pulley. Gravel is a fact of life here, even on the pavement (oilfield trucks).
