year model?

Apparently, my 2005 VN2000 was made late 2004. What's the difference in years? I didn't really find much googling it.

Well, it's still a 2005 model.

Just like the 2004 models were made in 2003, so they would be available and on the floor in 2004.

Main differences though?

Umm... I don't remember when they went to double bearings on the rear wheel. I think it was actually after 2005, so keep check on yours.

Mid 2005 they changed the angle of how the kickstand is mounted on the down-tube. This makes the bike lean less.

(A lot of people with 2004 and early 2005's have changed out the down-tube. One of these days' I'll do mine. I've had a pair sitting around for years now.)

Changed the "retard" of the ECU. Having a 2005, your going to want to do the 5th gear retard mod. It's the biggest bang for the buck thing you can do. Search the forums. There are several write up's on it...what it is, and what it does.

Changed the design of the ..um... um... that thing that goes under the bike (near oil filter). Went from 1 big one to two small ones. Darn it, what's that thing called?

The rear brake line is different in the 2004 models.

Hey Smed: Memory startin' to go, is it?

Is funny cus' it startin' to happen to me more often that I would like to admit.

I believe those are the rectifiers. you have to make sure the connector are well sealed or relocate them somewhere in the back.

I figured the changes would be minor. I will be looking into an 06 kickstand assembly though. My 05 is definitely too short.
One mod I would love to do is the euro gears. Maybe one day...

I'm pretty sure that changing the kickstand isn't the answer. As smedlin said, you have to change the frame downtube. I just attached a hunk of plywood to my kickstand to make it not lean so much.

Also consider that lean angle works to your advantage sometimes, the town I live in has a lot of hills and often I have to park the bike in places where the angle of the street works against me, if not extreme I know the short kick stand lets me be more confident the bike wont fall over or force me to turn it around to park in a way the bike will lean even more (even though I have a '07 model that has somewhat better kickstand length).

I have gotten pretty good at using my weight to put the bike to vertical to the point that is almost effortless, I remember comments about the bike being to big and heavy when I first bought it but I remember a line from the movie "13th warrior" in which Antonio Banderas is complaining about a big heavy Viking Sword, and the viking just tells him "just grow stronger", my point being that if the bike gives me bit of a work out is not that I can't do it, I don't work out that much so I can say my ridding IS my work out.... within reason.

On the EURO-GEARS mod, all I can say is go for it, a very good advice I got way back when, was to go ahead and ride it with the american gears for a while b4 I did the mod, so I could really decide if it was for me, that gave me time to do the research and consider other options but I ended up doing it and could not be happier with them.

I read about the rear bearing upgrade but I think i'll just change bearings when I change the rear tire...should be ok.

It is usually just the bearing in the vibration damper that goes. Not made for all that massive tire churning torque lol
Since my wife made me put all the luggage on I haven't found the need to change the bearings all that often.
I put a 2006 hub on my 04 and change the 4 bearings every other year now.
Another thing to check on the early V2Ks is the neck bearing grease situation.
Mine didn't have any and got pretty hard to steer lol.....

If you've got the single bearing, you should change it. For what it's worth, I've had 2 V2Ks and both of the (single) rear bearings went out at right around 15K miles. Both gave me plenty of warning. If yours isn't making any noise (and it sounds it's not), just do it when you get th rear tire changed, like you said.

Here are the parts you'll need:
42033-0020 1x Hub,
42036-0027 1x Sleeve,
92152-0321 1x Collar,
