Neutral light isn't coming on, won't start with stand down.

This morning, I started having problems with my neutral light.
I always put the bike in neutral, start it, and walk away to let it warm up for a little, but this time, the neutral light was not coming on.
I tried pressing up on the lever a bit harder, and there are some spots where the light does come on, but as soon as I let go of the shift lever, the light goes off again.
So at least I know the bulb itself is good.
Any idea what could be going wrong?

I appreciate your help guys...and sorry if this has been asked before.

I never looked in to it a lot, but I have had that happen to me a few times on my 08. But if i rock the bike back and forth a few times and kit in between 1st and neutral a few times it comes back on. Just never thought much of it personally. Curious as to what I may see here though.

yea, do like 08V2K said, rock the bike just a bit to change up the clutch plates some.

Also, your oil condition/type can have a huge affect on that as well (it's a wet clutch, and it uses the same oil as your engine oil..)

I recently had my gear position sensor or Neutral switch replaced because it was failing. Now it works about 70% of the time. I called the shop, and they told me that there was also a pin and a spring that they should have replaced, and they ordered the parts to do that. I'll let you know if / when they get it in and get replaced and we'll see if that fixes it. In the meantime, I also found that rocking the bike seems to help.

Sounds like the gear position switch is going bad. You have to remove the transmission cover to get to it.

BigT beat me to it. I got a phone call in the middle of typing.

BigT, are they going to charge you to go back in since they should have replaced the parts to begin with?

You can stretch the spring yourself and save the money on any replacement parts. Now with that being said, its a small spring and doesnt need to be pulled straight, increase the length of it uncompressed by 25% and that should be more than sufficiant.

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, some rocking helped. I parked it on my driveway, which is in a slight upward incline, and the light went on at first. I went for a short ride again, and then once I parked later, the light flickered a little, then went off.

Thanks BigT, I'll await your reply, to see if I need to replace that.

Davidr: no, they're not going to charge me labor. If so, I think I'd have pulled the cover and stretched the spring or replaced the part myself! Now that I've had her a couple of weeks, I'm markedly more comfortable with what noises she's SUPPOSED to be making, and not nearly as concerned about dragging out the tool kits. LOL.

tj, look at the eurogear threads and see a pic of the gear position sensor/brass pin under the right side gear box cover. its that little brass pin (spring loaded) in the hex shaped doohiky under the gears.. somebody has a pic.pdf can post it here for the troops to see.

my 04 would not crank after a fuel stop in AZ the neutral light would not come on after fooling around with for a while I found out it would crank and start if I pulled the clutch all the way in

drove it that way for about 3 months

took it to dealer they replaced the gear position sensor for about 400.00 been good since then
