My experience comes from other bikes with this setting but that is usually the "Prime" setting. Sounds like your petcock is a vacuum operated petcock. Prime allows fuel to flow to the carbs when it was run so low the carbs are dry. It is not advised to leave the bike parked in the prime setting.
