Question 94 1500 classic Known problems and issues

I just bought a 1994 Vulcan 1500 Classic with only 4500 miles. I have read and heard of many horror stories. Oil leaking into airbox and carbs , plastic oil pump gears , Second gear issues, cam chains breaking ....I thought these bikes were bullett proof.....I also own a 1986 Yamaha Venture Royale 1300 with 29,000 miles on the clock...I know that is bullett proof engine and very fast too for a full dressed ride. This is where I got my user ID ROLLING BARCALOUNGER. Please HELP woth ANY known issues or Problems I might expect from the Vulcan 1500 Much thanks

Only issue I know of is the plastic oil gear see http://www.vroc.org/faq/jopg/jopg.html

1. Oil in air box... not aware of it being a "real" issue.
2. Carbs...no more problematic than on any other bike. At least there is only 1 vs 4.
3. Oil pump gear... see this: http://www.skidrobinson.ca/POG/pog.htm
4. Second gear issue...seems to be problem in the 1996 area, but if you do high speed power 1-2 shifts, then you may have some problems. If I remember, some early Ventures had a problem with jumping out of 2nd gear? But, I agree, they are a pretty good bike, too!

Post back if you have any more questions about your new bike. 4500 miles...wow!
You may have some issues with an older bike, clocking such low mileage, to get back on the road.

Plastic oil pump gear failure OMG does not sound good. Any fixes?

Plastic Oil Gear

From 1987 through 1999, all Vulcan 1500 models, except the Drifter, were built with a plastic oil pump gear. Several Vulcan 1500s have experienced failures of these plastic gears, causing varying degrees of damage to their engines. To date, Kawasaki has repaired every Vulcan, in the United States, that has experienced a failure of the oil pump gear, whether in or out of warranty. Our international brethren have not faired as well as it seems Kawasaki has not been consistent in it's policy, country to country. Failure rates have varied from model to model. Few failures have occurred on 1500A models, while the 1500 Classics have experienced a higher failure rate. It seems that Nomads are probably experiencing the highest failure rates. In total, the percentage of Vulcan 1500s experiencing the failures has been low, but, significant enough to cause serious concern among owners. Kawasaki Australia wasnít interested.
JOG oil gear has worked for some but not in my case. Such is Life.
My NOMAD is currently under going a rebuild even though the motor it self hasnít failed. The rebuild is necessary to change the oil gear.
