Default New rider - how to lock front wheel?

Hello - What an excellent forum! I'm a new female rider and have just picked up a 2005 Vulcan 500 without an owners manual. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to lock the front wheel. If I push in the key and move it to the right (P), the rear brake light goes on, but the wheel doesn't lock in place. Am I doing something wrong?

I really like this bike and having taken the M/C Safety Council Course, feel pretty good riding, just need a bit more practice. Now if the weather would just behave.....

Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

Default front wheel lock

Don't feel bad. The fork lock on the VN 500 works differently than any other cycle I've used. You must push in on the key as you are turning it to the right. The whole cylinder pushes in about a quarter of an inch and locks in the inner position (which locks the steering column). When you unlock it, you may have to take a bit of pressure off of the lock by just barely moving the bars while you are turning the key. Good luck, be patient, and by all means don't twist off that key. I've heard lots of people complain about this lock but I suspect some of them were not patient enough to determine how it worked and how best to make it turn easier. Good luck and enjoy the bike. Tom

I've never gotten it to work on mine and just gave up. Others have similar experiences so if you don't get it you're in good company. Enjoy it, it is a wonderful fun bike to ride, and from a stop no one will beat you

If I'm reading this right, you trying to use the ignition switch to lock your forks, which won't work. The fork lock (wheel lock) is up by the handlebars under a metal slide cover. When you insert the key, push it in, cylinder and all with the wheel turned to the right. You may have to "jiggle" the handlebars a little to line things up, then turn the key to the front to lock it. I gotta mess with mine quite a bit to get just right. The "P" on the ignition switch is a parking light. If your parked on the side of a dark road and want to be seen without having the bike running or something like that.

Default front wheel lock

When I bought my 2000 500 the previous owner said that the wheel lock didn't work and he couldn't figure out why. After spraying the lock mechanism with some penetrating spray lube and fiddling with it, I finally got it to work. The breakthrough came when I found out that the key only works IN ONE DIRECTION.

Insert the key into the lock cylinder and while turning it counter-clockwise, push in. If the cylinder doesn't turn and push in, rotate the key 180 degrees/half-a-turn and try again. The cylinder should turn about a quarter turn or less and go in about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. When the cylinder bottoms out, while holding it pushed in, turn the key back clockwise. It should click into the locked position and the cylinder should remain pushed in.

To unlock, insert the key and while moving the handle bars back and forth gently to relieve pressure on the locking pin, push in on the cylinder and turn counter-clockwise and the locking pin should release and the cylinder should pop back out to the original unlocked position. Turn the key back clockwise and remove.

On my bike the key also only works in one direction on the ignition switch.

Oh wow - I was trying to use the ignition switch (oops) and have now found the slide cover - thank you! Now that I am using the right lock, I'll try and fiddle with it to make it work.

When we got my wifes 2005/500, I had to lubricate the cylinder before it would move in, once you do it a few times it is easy. Her's is the same nice blue color.

Hey I learned something. I never realized that the ignition had anything beside on and off. I'm going to look for the P option. Tom

I did the same.. Sprayed a decent amount of DW40 in the wheel lock cylinder and it works perfectly. It just take a little getting used to. Twist the key and push down, and when it stays *down*, it's locked. Sometimes wiggling the handlebars is necessary.
