How do you use it?

2003 Vulcan 800 Classic.

On my 500, you turn the front wheel all the way to the left, insert the key, push in and turn clockwise. I have to wiggle the front wheel a little while turning the key. Hope this helps.

I don't. When I first started riding I was always told to avoid it as they had a tendency to stick over time. I'm not sure how much fact there is to that, but I've not really had any trouble with not using it so far...

Just as Daisy Filed said . It won't stick if you spray little WD-40 every now and then in the key hole .

My '97 800 Classic's steering lock appears to be busted. The previous owner had a couple of dumps on her and I assume it got messed up at that time.

As already mentioned, push the key down and turn it to the left; that allows turning the front wheel to the left and locks it.

I use the steering lock every time I park my bike, even in my garage.
