So I've noticed on my new-to-me '04 1500 Classic (carbed) that the radiator fan runs pretty frequently, and I'm wondering if it's normal. As an example, I took the bike for a quick ride tonight around the neighborhood. The ambient air temp was in the low 70's. The road leading back to my house in the 'burbs is one of those with stops signs spaced infuriatingly close together. By the time I get into 2nd or 3rd gear, I'm getting ready to slow down for the next stop sign. I would say I encounter about six such stop signs before I get to my driveway. And, as was the case tonight, I can hear the fan kick on, usually at the last stop sign, and again as I'm pulling into my driveway/garage. I get off the bike to open the garage door and the fan kicks on. A lot of the time the fan stays on for maybe 10 seconds after I turn the key off. The overtemp light has never come on, and no boilovers.
Just in case, I flushed the radiator and replaced the old coolant with new coolant. The problem (if it is a problem) remains.
So what say you Vulcan experts? Do I have a problem, or am I jumping at shadows?
Just a quick double check, how did you refill it? Once in a blue moon someone will hop on with cooling issues and, come to find out, they refilled it from the overflow tank. You can do that on some cars, but not on these bikes. Must be filled from the fill cap under the tank. So I've gotta ask that question! How did you fill it!
Otherwise, I don't think it's abnormal. Of course you always want every part of your machine to be as efficient as possible. Running synthetic oil and keeping the coolant changed every year or two will help it run cool. But I don't think you've got an issue.

I appreciate the responses. For the record, I filled it at the radiator. I removed the speedo housing, and I was able to access the cap. I drained the old fluid, filled it with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and distiller water, drained, and then filled with pre-mixed coolant.
I feel a bit better. Sounds like I don't need to worry.
I use amsoil synthetic and the honda premix coolant. If the outside temp was in low 70s my fan wouldn't run unless I sit and idle for more than about 5 minutes. My fan hardly runs unless its 85. Not saying anything is wrong, just saying that different setups will have different results. I think synthetic oil really helps as well as a good coolant! I also added an external crankcase breather, removed the intake crossover, reed valves and much of the associated plumbing around the motor, so I have real good airflow when I'm moving!
