Default Biker Brotherhood at its Finest

Today I went for a cruise to get some good photos of my bike since the sun finally came out and there's a great place for a "photo shoot" not 2 miles from here.

I get about a mile from the house, stop at a stop sign. Shift from 1st to 2nd... then clink clunk clink... my shift lever is laying in the middle of the road. Snapped right off. I pick it up, say a few choice words and ride home in 1st gear. I get the thing apart and see where it snapped off and priced new ones on BikeBandit.com and eBay. About $60 new but this is my only transportation and I see the break was clean. Looked like it could be welded back together pretty easily. The bike has a warranty but I would still be out my bike till the part came so I put a request on Craigslist for anybody close by with a welder, offering some old saddlebags in trade.

Not expecting much from the ad I made arrangements for a ride to work tomorrow and left a voicemail to the used dealer I bought the bike from. Then I get a call from a perfect stranger offering to help. He lives a few miles from me, offered to come pick me up, go get this fixed in his garage and take me home. He said he's not a welder by trade but knows how to use it and does odd jobs around the house with his little arc welder. 1/2 hour later he drops me off with my freshly mended shift lever. It worked beautifully and he accepted nothing in return but a handshake and a promise to return the favor if he ever needed.

He and his sons ride dirt bikes and he just picked up an '08 Nomad himself about a month ago and he just felt like he could help. I never considered myself a "biker" nor will I probably ever put that label on myself but the fellowship and camaraderie among "bikers" is awesome.

I just wanted to toss this out there and share my little blessing with the forum.

Likely I will never hear from him again. He's a fair weather rider and it's the beginning of January. I'll keep his number though and offer to ride and buy him lunch when we get a warm sunny day.

I hope you tell him about this forum. Sounds like somebody we would be proud to have here.
