Default Question on 1700 ignition

I'm thinking of buying a tach for my 2011 Nomad 1700. I've searched this forum but have been unable to determine if the 1700's are dual fire or single fire.

Now before the discussion gets started, I understand what dual fire ignitions and single fire ignitions are, I have dealt with both on Harleys. But my question is which is the 1700 dual fire or single fire ?

I could just order a dual fire tach and if it reads 1/2 what it should, then I could buy the single fire adapter, but figured you guys could tell me before hand.

I looked at the wiring diagram and it's got two coils each with it's own separate ECU pin. This seems like overkill for a true dual fire system. But the 1600s had two coils also and guys have told me they were dual fire.

So all you guys that bought tachs for your 1700s, where they calibrated for dual fire and if so did you have to buy a single fire adaptor.

If you did not buy a single fire adapter did you wire it to just one coil (at the negative primary terminal) or both coils ?

I put the Kawasaki accessory tach on my '09 Nomad. It was plug and play at a connector above the front cylinder.

I have a baron tach that I put on my nomad. We have a single fire ignition I needed to install the adapter that came with the tach for it to read properly. It was fairly easy install.

Something to keep in mind, once you add the adaptor to the Baron's tach you may get needle bounce, it happened to me. It's possible that if I had the patience to keep trying different adaptors I might have found one that worked OK, but I opted to return the Baron's and went with the Kawasaki tach instead and never regretted it. Pretty stiff difference in price though.

Thanks for posting that info. I have heard that before, especially with the cheaper tachs. Most seem to work fine with a dual fire ignition, but when they are installed on a single fire ignition with a single fire adaptor, some of them have been reported to bounce and jump.

I don't have that problem with the baron tach. It came with the adapter in the package from baron. Also a baron tach is far from a $50 cheap tach. Though cheaper than the kawasaki. Then again when I bought my old 900 it had a cheap tach that I added a homemade adapter and I didn't have any problems with it either.

Yes I have looked at the Baron and it is a very nice tach. And it includes the single fire adaptor with the tach for $200. Everyone I've read about had great service from it.

I've read of some guys with dual fire ignitions that got great readings from this tach (no bounce etc) for $50.

I had the mini tach on my old 900. It worked well. I am not quite sure what people mean by tach bounce. Is this at idle or constant, none the less either tach should work. The baron is the nicest of the 2.
