hey guys i have a 1988 vn1500 (B? not sure), and i want to get rid of the air box and run pod filters, also want to modify the exhaust and run straight pipes.
i've seen a few threads where guys have put new jet kits in but no real specifics as far as what kit or starting points with the needle turns..
can the carbs be adjusted to run what i want or is a jet kit absolutely necessary?
if i need to get one thats no problem, but any help on tuning it would be great!
Jets will be necessary if you run straight pipes and increase the air flow. You will probably need to need to increase the pilot jets and certainly the main jets. If you look for a Cobra, DynoJet or Thunder mfg jet kit, you should have everything you need it it. It's trial and error pretty much when you start going with aftermarket fuel and exhaust. General rule of thumb is one size up on the pilot jet and one to two sizes up on the main jets and see how it runs. if yuou have to tirn the pilot screw out more than two and a half to three turns, you need to go up one jet size. My bike is a single carb '04 Classic came with a 138 main jet and a 42 ( I believe, if I remember correctly) pilot jet. I went with a 145 main and a 45 pilot when I got pipes and a K&N filter. Since I got the Baron's Big Air kit, I bumped the main up to a 148.

I just started to cut the exhaust apart, i want to reuse the stock flanges that bolt up to the motor and just weld up some new pipe for the rest of the exhaust.. but ran into an issue. The stock exhaust o.d. is 1.90" but there is an inner pipe of 1.45" o.d. is it possible to tune the bike correctly thru jetting. If i run a true straight thru 2" pipe??

It should be okay. My pipes ate 2-1/2", I think.
