Where to Find 10W40 Oil For the Best Price

Hello everyone,

Where can I find SAE-10W-40 oil for the best price. I last couple of times I changed my own oil. I bought the oil and oil filter at the local bike shop, but each quart was expensive. I know what type to buy API SE, SF, or SG and or API SH or SJ with JASO MA. When I was at Walmart shopping, I looking at Castrol and Rotella 10W-40 (excuse my spellings) oils and they both seemed to have the oil type that my bike requires. Any suggestions???

P.S where to buy a good oil filter for a decent price??

I'm going to say to use a motorcycle specific oil to protect your clutch, and also they usually have a higher resistance to shear for the transmission gears. But the price gap for motorcycle dino-based oil has gotten so close to the price of synthetic oil that it probably makes more sense to go synthetic. You can buy Amsoil here through Bob, a sponsor, probably cheaper than you can buy other synthetic oil from a store. He has 10w-40 for blood, I believe!

My local dealer is Yamahahahaha, I use their 10-40 $20 a gallon plus tax.

cheapest place is walmart!!! Of course my stealership tried to tell me that if I ran any other oil besides kawasaki motorcycle specific blah blah blah my clutch would blah blah blah and the engine could possibly blah blah blah. That said you are a grown up and can make your own decision. Here is some facts though. I currently have over 85 thousand miles on my 08 vulcan 500. She does not burn nor leak any oil. I have run nothing but castrol gtx 10w-40 bought in the 5 qt jug at walmart since day one. I believe todays regular automobile oil is way better than the motorcycle oil available at the time this engine was designed. But like I said, you are an adult and can believe what you chose, and make your own decisions.

I use the same oil as freedombird, buy it at WalMart. Also buy my filters there.....Bosch (don't remember number).

I always used wal mart super tech 10-40 syntetic on all my vehicles

including goldwing, vn2k, and 3 off road bikes

Yup. Both Rotella T 15w-40 (mineral) and T6 5w-40 (synthetic) meet JASO MA spec, which means they are wet clutch safe.

Unfortunately motorcycle-specific filters aren't particularly cheap in general. Last time I bought WIX 51358 on Amazon, it was around $10. The same filter at NAPA costs $12.50. That's probably as much or more as OEM Kawi filter.

You can get Valvoline motorcycle oil almost anywhere, Mobile 1 as well. Wal-Mart, Autozone, etc.

Otherwise, send Bob a PM. You'll be surprised at what prices he'll quote ya. (look for Amsoil Dealer Group on the forum). If I remember right, he beat wal-mart prices on Valvoline Synthetic 10-40 for Amsoil 10W-40.

If you're wanting the dirt cheapest, then, that'll be the rotella conventional. Make sure whatever you buy has at LEAST the JASO MA rating. Though I'd really recommend going with a motorcycle specific oil, but it's your bike, your money!

Like I said, 85,000 miles on castrol gtx 10w-40 and first 75,000 with super tech 7317 oil filter. changed every 3,000 miles, but after some recent reading, and thinking about the feel when shifting, I think the oil may start shearing between 2000 and 3000 miles. To do it over, I probably would have changed it every 2500 instead. My next oil change will be the rotella 15w-40 though. I've been reading it has better additives for cleaning and engine longevity which makes since. For colder weather the rotella 5w-40 synthetic would be good and its 20.00 a gallon at tractor supply on sale; 21.00 a gallon reg price at walmart.
