Default 1996 1500 vulcan classic won't start

The bike started and ran all day Sunday. I stopped at the store on the way home and not even a click. All the lights were working. This happened once before. Rode to the train in the morning to go to work, and bike was dead at the end of the day. When I came back the next day it started with no problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

1) Check battery terminals. Especially check both ends of the ground to see if it's loose.

2) Check age of the battery. Older batteries (over 4 years) can be inconsistent. Try these things first.

I find that mine does this once in a while. In my case, if I pull the clutch lever and pop it, it will then start up. As such I'm sure it's a safety lockout in case it's in gear and the clutch lever not pulled. Obviously I need to address this before the safety fails completely.

I believe it will do the same thing (not start) if it's in gear and the kickstand is extended.

Nice bike. The white walls look great. I'm gonna have to pick up a set.

There is a wire harness that hooks up beneath the clutch master cylinder. You may need to check it. If it isnt tight. The bike will act normal but will not turn over. I thought I broke down once due to this. The harness has a small clip that breaks easily so more than likely you dont really have a problem at all. Just check the simple things first.

It started again. I'll look for the harness as soon as I get home.

If the bike is in neutral and the neutral light is working right that should not effect it not starting nor will the kick stand being down. do like Pat suggested first. if that does not help you need to test the starter solenoid and the circuit to it to see if you are getting power to it when the starter button is pushed. of coarse you can only locate the problem while it is acting up.

Thanks, they're Metzler tires. They were on the bike when I got it. The previous owner had installed them the year before I bought it.

This certainly makes sense in my case. I recall that the few times I have had the problem I was starting the bike when it was parked on the kick-stand. I would confirm that the bike was in neutral (green light) and the kill switch in the right position. It was always after I would pull the clutch lever and pop it (quickly release) that it would then start.

As for the battery being a potential issue, I replace it at the beginning of the season as it was pretty weak. At that time I cleaned the terminals and such. My start problem existed before and after battery replacement. I may check connections at the starter though just to make sure they're clean and tight, although base on symptoms and solution I think it's probably at the clutch lever.
