'06 Vulcan Nomad leaking around the gas cap

Hi, my Husbands 2006 Vulcan Nomad has a bit of an issue with the gas cap. It seem to leak around the cap after he fuels up and goes down a highway stretch. The gas streams down the tank.

He had a 2005 Nomad 1600 until he got rear-ended in June and the bike was a write off. He was OK!!. Anyway he used to be able to fill up the '05 to within 1/2 inch from the top and never a prob. Now with the '06 he can't fill it above the main lower hole or is seeps out, hence his gas mileage is much less because this accounts to about a liter or more less gas he can put in.

We tried a few different rubber seals/gaskets around the inner cap, but they didn't help at all or made it worse. Has anyone has this problem with 2006's in particular??? Thanks. (Meantime...we will search...)

Hmmm. it seems the Vulcan Nomad might have a unique problem. So far...no replies.

Thanks, but it's not a California model. Speedo is in Kms. U.S bikes are miles. Therefore, not the problem...yet.

I have a 06 Nomad, and I have had it do this a couple of times when I overfilled it. I can fill it to about 1/4 to 1/8 inch above the plate in fill neck and not have a problem but just a little more and it comes out around the cap or out the overflow hose. I can run it till the fuel light comes on and put 4.9 gallons plus in the tank. when I fill to the plate I can usually get about another 1/6 gallon in before I have the problem. Less if its hot out and have thermal expasion. hopes this helps ( you will have to convert to metric)

Thanks, your reply has been very helpful. We noticed such a difference between his '05 and '06, just thought something was really wrong. But, it may just be a little bit of weirdness going on. No one ever seems to know why some bikes differ so much even if they are the same model and the same year...Welcome more replies. Thanks.

I have a 06 1500 FI and have the same problem.
In the warm weather, gas leaks from around the gas cap.
I'm trying to find a new cap gasket, but can't find the part #.

same thing with me after filling up.
Streak of gas runs down the tank and you can smell it quite strongly.
Fire hazard anyone????

OK I have had this problem--the small prong looking thing on the cap that fits down into the hole was tarnished for whatever reason--so I took a rag and simply cleaned that prong around and around and it actually fixed that problem

I unscrewed the inner cap and removed and cleaned everything.
Put it back together...and we'll see when i fill up.
Did not today as it is -4c and snowing.
i was too cold to want to stop for gas coming home from work.
