Default carb adjustment

Hi,
Vulcan 1500 classic 2003.
on cool morning ( about 5deg celcius) it is very hard to start it. I talked with a friend and conclusion (maybe): because it is running rich ( it is ), and with the full choke it get flooded. (which could make sense because it realy smell gaz when that happen. and I also discover that it start better with 1/2 choke when not cool morning)

So I would like to adjusting the mixture screw.

the service manual says it should be 2 turn out (+ or - 1/4).
on my bike It is adjust to 2 1/4. So I thought I should screw it (clockwise) to get closer to 2 turn(to get my mixture less rich). but my friend told me that the screw actualy controle air, so I have to unscrew it to get more air through, and then get a less rich mixture.
but it would put me out of the manual spec!?!.

Could you confirm which way I have to turn the mixer jet ???
and if I have the go out of the spec... is it a problem? should I be worried?? any advice.

Default carb

Your right! You turn it clock wise to reduce fuel. Mine is set at 1and half turns. On my nomad the manuel says 1and half to two turns.good luck!

So what does the mixture screw actualy do? it is not a air but a fuel variator?right?

It mixes air and fuel ratio. You can go to gadjet fix it page under maintenance tips and scroll down to the cv carb section and with pitures it will explain everything. Don't start ajusting if you don't have to. Also look up cv or constant velocity carbs on the internet and ther are good info there. Maybe SFAIR or someone will reply also but the gadjet page is vry good.

The pilot slight mis-adjustment will not spill fuel all over. (smell of gas)
On your next cold start, try this:

1. Pull on choke.
2. Do NOT twist throttle at any time, but leave it closed.
3. Hit starter.
4. If it does not start within a few trys and you again smell gas, then it needs repairs.
5. Do not grind away on the starter.

Your friend was refering to a "reverse idle" carb, which this is not. The pilot screw controls both air and fuel as a mix with the pilot jet being the overall arbitor in the rich/lean arena.

Post back with your results.

Believe me I would mess with it if I didnt have to... Last summer it happen (wouldnt start) a morning I was 3hr away from home in a Lake Placide's hotel parking... believe me when I got home later that day, I was planning to get rid of the bike... (I did calme down)
That being said: I read on carbs. the 2 way to adjust it I found on the web are:
with a 200$ exhaust monitor or turning the pilot screw oneway and the other while engine running and find the middle( no site was specific about which way enrich the mixture )
anyway it seems that it may not be the problem (read the following post)

Hi, I cannot do that right now, but I can tell you anyway:
I never touch the throttle when I try to start it and with full choke it does smell gaz after a few try ( like a floodded engine)
Dont know if it will help but I did discover that pull release pull the choke will help and actualy make the engine run... sometime...
and the 1/2 choke sometime too (see first post)

so repair... "tarbar"/$%?&"...(french swearing) LOL
I thought the flooding theory made sense, I was happy because it seemed easy to fix...now I am sad... LOL
So what kind of repair are we talking about? still carb??

The first thing to try would be some Seafoam in the gas tank. Add according to manufacturers recommendations. Use a couple of times. Parts Source carries it.
Failing that, a carb teardown and inspection may be required.
It sounds as if you may have a leaking/sticky float valve which if the bike does not start right away, floods the engine (hence the smell). If the bike starts right up, the engine vibration makes the float function OK until next cold restart.
The only other way to flood is to twist on the throttle as these carbs do have an accelerator pump.

As an add, pull and examine plugs for a fuel soak or fouled condition.
Also, how many miles on the bike?
Any aftermarket add-ons?
How long have you owned?
Any driveability problems, no matter how small?
Has any work been recently done?

Post back with your findings.

Any aftermarket add-ons? has far as I know, no.everything is stock.
How long have you owned? 2years
Has any work been recently done? final gear oil leak... that is it.
Any driveability problems, no matter how small? no, seriously if it wouldnt be about that problem, the engine is top shape. runs great all the time even when cold.
I ll work on the bike tomorow pm and let you know the result.
