hey guys, great continued feedback. and great photos, you guys got some nice looking 9's.
Strom pilot, what did you mean by 'IMO', its a loser on the highway?
I appreciate your personal feed back on the shadow, power was a concern for me as much as maintence.
The maintence schedule link was great, and thanks to that member. It mentioned valve check maintence, none of you have mentioned that they need to get serviced ever??? so I think its more overrated and probably have to drive it really hard over time to have to service the top part of the motor, but still would be expensive. I know i have never read the phantom in need of that during its schedule, but I should prob. check that out at the dealer.
I appreciate that 09'vuclan for sale post, only 523k?for 5k, could that be true???I am sure I can do a car/bike fax on it to make sure, the thing is the bikes def. has been sitting and dont know if the fluids have been takin out during its storage, it could be more of a headache if it has problems?
thanks.
That's correct, IMO=In My Opinion.
If you are referring to my comment about the Honda being a "loser," it means just that. With flea power you'd be wanting for more power right away. I think that it would actually be strained and at it's upper limits of power at highway speeds, and wouldn't be a very satisfying ride. My approach is to get what you want and need, rather than settle for a compromise. That way you will be happy with your ride.

....I ve been thinking if I do go 2-4 yrs used on either bike, yes I get a good price probably half of msrp 8k to 4k, but it will have at least 10k, and might need new tires,brakes/tune up, belt etc,. down the road and if you add that up that could be 2k right there...so i am leaning 12,13' right now in the 7k-8k range.....once i decide on either bike.
Any word on valve maintenance on the vulcan, saw the manual says after 36months, havent heard u guys mention it at all and could be exp.?
any suggestions on oil reg, synthetic or blend and how long you have to change, pretty new to that. I know 4cars synthetic could be 6k....when u have to change it.
Also, any advice on short pipes vance/hines or cobra or another brand, i heard their like 500$ but the installation is easy. not a big fan of the stock noise and dont want to debaffle them and butcher the original pipes...what you guys think? thanks
I narrowed my choice down to the Yam Star and the VN900 and just went with whatever turned up used in the right used price/condition. I ended up with a VN and am very satisfied. You won't go wrong with either but imo they are better than the Honda & HD. The VN is the best looking mid-size by a country mile. A Suzuki Boulevard should also be considered above both HD & Honda.

I think the ads that were posted show that a used bike in the half priced range won't necessarily have 10,000 miles. Even at 10,000 miles, the MOST you'd be looking at is $400 for new tires (in the future). Valve check/adjustment is at 15,000. I've got 16,xxx on my bike and will probably wait until 18,000 to do that. I also suspect I'll NEVER need to replace the drive belt. Your $2K estimate is WAY OVER. Another thing to consider is that a used bike may also have added accessories like aftermarket exhaust, seat, backrest, saddle bags, etc, that can quickly add up to $2000 or more if you are buying them separately, but add next to nothing to the cost of a used bike.
It sounds like you already have your mind made up concerning "new" or used, just don't say you weren't warned.
Nonsense. I bought used 2006 Vulcan mint condition (When I say mint I mean FLAWLESS, exception was three inch light scratch in upper right of windshield) with 3040 miles for $4,000. Mind you! That came with river road saddle bags, vulcan windshield, cobra exhaust, and river road small roll pouch to match saddle bags. Just have to look and dicker.
Oh, I put 4,000 miles on my original dunlaps already since purchasing in late July 2012.

There's a guy on the Volusia forums selling an 09 Boulevard with 800 miles on it for 5300.00 for his son. There are good prices out there right now for bikes. Go to some of the forums of the bike types that you are interested in and check out the bikes in the bikes for sale sections.
hey guys, great points. Vandy has me switchin my mind and going used, thats a lot of value. He got a great deal and came with alot accessories. I dont think they come often those type of deals, but also have to beaware of mileage turnbacks and checking out the bike. I am not sure if used sales guy will let u drive the bike as well?
Yes, good point. I was thinking to hear what honda guys would say. but i am pretty much going for the vulcan 9, not only bc this is a great forum with unbiased opinions but the proof is in the pudding.
where can i find good reputable bikes?ebay? should i get retail or private owners that are more motivated sellers? retail guys would offer me a warranty with the bike that would be a good deal, dnt want to go older than 11' and 3-5k on it, so i figure 4-5k?maybe i could get one.

I did get a good deal, the gentleman was very trustworthy as I met him personally and asked him questions. In fact, I understood him to be so as much as to not test drive it. I couldn't anyhow, did not know how to ride. Just checked craigslist for 3-4 weeks and looked at bikes from this in person. Grand Rapids has a pretty wide spread for Craigslist, so I would check a nearby large city as well. A lot of the dealers list on there as well. I often like to meet the owners face to face, you can always tell if someone is pulling the wool over you if you look em in the eyes. Old man, medical reasons, and his love for the bike sold me. It runs like a champ and like others have said, at 7,000 miles now, seems like it really wants to go.
