Back Rest

Hi everyone,
I am considering getting a back rest for my ride. However the misses likes to sit close when we ride. She is concerned that with the back rest she will not be able to lean forward and "cuddle". Does anyone have the driver backrest on their bikes and is it an issue or is it low enough that the wife will still be able to get her closeness?

Well every backrest is different, but, I have the Mustang backrest on my mustang seat. It's a whole new world of comfort on a long trip, it supports your back, it also give you a platform to lean against when shifting weight or stretching on a long non-stop ride.

Wife has never complained about it. She doesn't have a problem hanging on to me if she chooses to. It doesn't seem to get in her way. It's there, but, it doesn't bother her. One thing I've found is that Kawasaki cruisers (and the 900 I assume you ride based on your avatar is no exception) give a tremendous amount of passenger room, compared to other brands. Even big touring bikes like the Harley Davidson Electra Glide don't give as much passenger 'space' as the 900. So the backrest is less of an issue on a Vulcan than it might be on other rides.

If it's a concern, though, I'd suggest going with a Mustang or Corbin seat with backrest, as opposed to a seperate backrest for your stock seat (such as a utopia). The reason is, they mount IN the seat, sit a little lower, and take up less space. The misses will likely have more room with a 'built in' backrest.

Don't know what kind of bike you have. On our 1600, I got a grasshopper - mostly because of the price.

I used it sometimes. Others not. It slides in so comes off and on in 1 second. It really never got in the way --- but I seldom used it with her on the back. It is smaller than others I have seen, but worked nicely to support my back.

I was backrest curious so went this route due to the smaller investment in case I didn't like it. No regrets and it did what I wanted.

I have the Grasshopper on my Nomad. It slides right out when I don't want it on the bike.

I have the grasshopper too. Works great for little money. I also take it off when the Mrs comes along.

I have ridden a 1100 Yamaha V-Star custom with a back rest and a 09 Ultra Classic with a backrest. My wife HATED them. They took up too much space and put her hips in a bind because of the way she had to hold her legs. As for on the Kaw, I do not know but what I do know is that they feel like they have more passenger room than any of the other bikes I have ridden. I would go with something that is easy to remove and use your wife and a back rest when you are 2 up.

I have a 2011 Vaquero...I also bought the grasshopper seat...I ride solo, but the back rest does come out so when the wife wants to "cuddle" she could...I think I paid $99 plus shipping.
