As a general rule, retarding cam timing moves the torque peak down the rpm range, advancing moves it up.

Degreaser........ Can u get ur grey matter around this.........
All but 2 types of engines WILL have the cam timing change ever so slightly straight out of the box during its normal operation.........
It's called thermal expansion. As the chain and push rods heat up they will expand, thus changing the cam timing but only a minuscule amount which will not be noticeable.

What are the other 2 engines that are not effected?

a wankel is also known as a rotary engine....but most will know it as that weird thing under the hood of a mazda rx-7 !!!!

Interesting stuff. Can anyone with real experience tell me how many miles I can expect to get on my very well maintained and tenderly ridden 2002 vn1500 classic before timing chain wear will need to be addressed. Thanks

Good question, No positive answer, as there are way too many variables that effect the system as a whole. In a bad scenario it could only last 20,000 miles and in a good as much as 100,000 or more. The load on the chain is high on the pins inside the bearings of each roller and also the leading side of sprocket teeth. As the pins and bearings wear, it gets longer (stretch) and puts more load on teeth of sprockets. Its a continuous snow ball.

How many miles do the cam chains go before the stock tensioner has taken up all the slack it can ?
How long do the sprockets on the cams last ?
If you allow the chain to stretch won't it ruin the cam sprockets ?
What does it cost at the dealer to change the camchain ?
Are there aftermarket camchains available that last longer ?
