After 58,000 plus miles and 3 years on my 2000 classic I went down. I have over $6,000.00 in extras added to the bike. It has a bent frame. Front end is bent to left sitting on the bike. Now what do I do ? Sell it to a salvage yard ? Piece part it on Craigs list ? I don't know if it's worth all the time and money to fix her. What do you all think ?
You'll get the most money out of tearing it down and selling the parts. You'll spend the least time letting a scrap yard haul it off and pay you for it, or selling it 'as is' on craigslist. I once sold an engine, gift wrapped inside a car! LOL.
If you sell the accessories, figure on getting between 30~50% of the price you paid for them in good condition. Damaged they are probably worthless, unless it's cosmetic only damage on something that isn't a cosmetic item.
If it were me I'd take any good accessories off and sell them on the forums or eBay for about 50% of what I paid for them, but be willing to accept lower offers. Then I'd sell the bike on craigslist as is for someone to rebuild, or just pull the motor out of. Sell it cheap, cut losses. Although if you have full coverage, I don't see any reason not to let the insurance company total it...
It's a good idea too to keep enough accessory coverage for your bike. If you don't have that separate coverage, you won't get anything for bent crash bars and damaged chrome pieces. I go through progressive who offers $3,000 for free, but even bumping that to $6,000 only adds a few bucks a year, well worth it in my opinion. If my bike goes down, there are a lot of 'add ons' that will likely be destroyed. The point of having insurance, after all, is to reduce the out of pocket cost on you in the aftermath of an accident.

Pretty much everywhere, a bent frame on a bike is the end for her. For me, if I really liked the bike (and got to keep the wreck), I would purchase a used one, transfer my extras over, sell what's left, and get back on the road! Sounds good in theory, but every crash is different, so your mileage may vary.
If you like the bike and have collision I would also buy it back from the insurance company and use it as a parts bike.
I have been doing this on my Valkyries.
BOTH bikes are salvage. One a deer crash, the other a rear end SUV crash.
Works for me.

I asked about buying my bike back from the insurance company, they told me it would take over $5000 to get it back, I said never mind.
I bought my 2007 Vulcan 2000 classic brand new. I didn't have collision at all. I needed a bike to make a planned trip to Vegas. I bought a 2009 Nomad so I could make the trip. It is a lot easyer to ride. I'm not getting any younger. Parts from the 2000 are pretty much useless. I think your all right with piecing it out and saying good by to it. I'm not going to stop riding.
wow thats crazy $5000 buyback.... MOST insurance companys up here run a buyback of 10% of what the payout for the bike was... example my 06 wave they payed me $8250 when it was totaled and i bought it back for $825...
My bike finally went to auction and now I need another ride. Looking at V2K's, Honda VTX 1800's, and a few others but really want something comparable to the beast. I miss her.
Anyone know of anything out there for sale that's in good shape at reasonable price?
