I had the pleasure of riding a Patriot Guard mission to welcome home a wounded warrior today. We met his flight at the Huntsville, AL airport and, with great support from many law enforcement officers, escorted home to Sardis City, AL. If you have not ridden a PGR mission you should.

My buddy Don Piggot and I were asked to ride last in the line of bikes because we both pull big flags. Here is video report from our local paper:

I was in an exscort ride last year for a leutenant returning home after recieving a head injury that removed most of his forehead. Before seeking treatment he made sure all the men under his command were treated that needed it. This is a man who is a real hero! Was proud to help welcome him home.

That's awesome, Mick. PGR and other vet orgs do great things for vets and helping others when needed is what it's all about. I'm currently trying to work with the Wounded Warriors Regiment to acquire durable medical equipment for veterans and their family members.

I would like to second your suggestion about supporting the Patriot Guard Riders. I have been with the group for some time and find that it is a very rewarding way to invest my time. The welcome home missions are quite a different experience from the funerals, but both are important as far as supporting our active duty troops, veterans and their families. Thanks Roger. I sent this to some friends that play trumpet. Sounds like a great organization. Most of the funerals around here get the military for the flag ceremony and taps, but they use the fake bugle with the MP3 player in it.

Hi Mickey. Thanks for thinking about inviting your friends to participate. Far more important than recruiting more players for Bugles Across America is spreading the word that the organization exists and is offering the service of live taps at no charge.

As an example, when a request is entered on the website for a funeral at Sarasota National Cemetery here in Florida, the request is emailed to about 100 buglers who live within a 50 mile radius. And the requests don't come very often. The result is that the number of those who are willing to play far, far exceeds the number of opportunities to do so.

I sound Taps 75 to 100 times each year and almost all of those are at Patriot Guard Rider supported funerals or as a result of contacts that I have with local funeral directors. People consistently tell me that they have never attended a military funeral where Taps was sounded live.

We attended a funeral last year with the Patriot Guard Riders at Bushnell National Cemetery for a young man who was killed in action in Afghanistan. Full honors were rendered including a horse drawn caisson, an Army Chaplain and a seven man firing party. The attending Officer in Charge was a two-star general, commanding officer of the 1st Armored Division. The Taps was the recorded version played on what you correctly referred to as the fake bugle. We like to refer to it as the "toy" bugle. This young soldier and his family and friends deserved better than a recorded version of Taps, as do all veterans who have served our country.

Bugles Across America also offers its services to firefighters and Law Enforcement Officers.

You will find that participating with the Patriot Guard Riders is a meaningful and moving experience. I attend many funerals with the PGR and sound Taps at Sarasota National Cemetery here in Florida. On a regular basis (almost every week) are funerals for veterans with no family and no friends to make arrangements or to attend the services. The Patriot Guard Riders turn out in large numbers to make sure that these veterans are honored for their service and sacrifice. The sad truth is that the overwhelming majority of these "no family - no friends" funerals are Vietnam era vets. One is on my calendar this Wednesday 11/21/12.

The welcome home events are a much different type of experience, and much more uplifting)
