Five of us rode over to Defuniak Springs Fl today for lunch. Round trip is about 280 miles. I filled up with Chevron 92 Octane and rode 60 miles at 60 mph in 6th gear and got 48.4 mpg!!! That's the most I've ever gotten.

Once we hit the interstate and went up to 70+ I figured my mileage would drop a bunch but I still averaged over 47 mpg.

I don't know if it was the gas, or what, but you can bet I'll fill up again with Chevron and see.

Speed has a lot to do with it. I average in the mid 50's, sometimes up around 60mpg on my 900, which is not typical for the 9. The reason? I spend a lot of time on 55mph state highways, not taking corners aggressively, and don't often exceed 65 on the interstate. Makes a world of difference! Impressive mileage!

Don't mean to hijack the thread or anything but, how accurate is the MPG on the dash of those 1700's? Do you all ever reference it with the good ol' odometer/gallon check?

My Vaquero was pretty darn accurate. It would fluctuate a little one way or the other, but typically no more than 1 mpg. I was impressed!
And yes, on secondary highways, I get very good mileage from this beast. My commute however has about half my trip on the Interstate, and yup, that shaves about 7 mpg off what I could get on the side road. The Interstate commute here is really "hammer-time" but it gets me to work and back home in good time, plus keeps the soot out of the engine!

Same here with my 2011 Vaquero. I'm what you'd call a fairly aggressive rider, though. I put a lot of interstate miles on mine, also. Have the same experience with the 2006 Vulcan, so I'm sure it's just my riding style and the roads I use every day.

I forgot to mention there was a strong east wind behind me and that always makes for better mileage; maybe not that mush, but better.

As far as the accuracy of the ECU mileage, with the inclusion of the rear HD Dunlop Americam 180/65B-16 tire, the mileage readout is dead on.

So far I've managed to get 42.5 mpg once. Most of the time it's averaging 40-41 mpg. When I get my giddy up on it drops real fast! I try not to do that too often. Don't need any tickets!

For reference I only have 3000 miles on mine but I've only had it 6 weeks!

I'm not complaining cause I normally got only 45 mpg on my 900 Custom. But I rode that puppy pretty hard. Running 85 mph on a daily basis on the highway.

I have been averaging under 40 since my ECU recall work. Well, After doing the major service on the bike, I can say that I saw 47 MPG on an 80 mile leisurely country ride. Calculated at the fuel pump. I reset the average when I fueled up prior to the 80 miles and actually saw in the 50s, but that was barely opening the throttle and holding it steady on flat terrain at 50 MPH. When I climbed some long hills the average dropped.
