Funny, after the mod and filling up the tank, now my fuel gauge seems to be much more accurate, it shows a little over half full (55%-60% full) and the trip meter shows around 94-95 miles, meaning around 200-210 miles for about 4-4.5 gallons which is fairly accurate considering almost all my riding is on the street, short distance riding.

Here's a pic of mine with 175 miles since full. That's about 3 gallons gone, and 2 remaining. If it looks like 2/5 remaining, I'm happy!

Thanks Ron. I will see how it goes for the remainder. I doubt I would get around 250 miles on a full tank but it should be close.

I am almost tempted to continue riding around with some spare gas in a small container just to see how many miles I get after the light comes on...

Compared to my tweaked Vmax though, Vulcan is really fuel efficient!

I got around to doing this mod over the weeked. Your video was a great help. It took me about a half hour, but that's because I ended up going through 3 resitors before I got one to take - kept snapping the leads off trying to squeeze it in with the wire. i finally uncrimped the connector, put the leads down, then recrimped and no issues. Now to ride until I'm out of gas to see how close it is.

Thansk again!

Wow. I had always brushed this mod off. Lots of bikes don't even have fuel gauges and I've even had cars with broken fuel level sensors that I hadn't bothered to fix, I'm so used to using the trip odometer that I just pretended like I didn't have a fuel gauge and figured dealing with resistors and wiring and all that jazz wasn't worth it for me.

After watching your video though, it looks like a piece of cake! I think I'm gonna do it. Be nice to have a bike with a fuel gauge!

Also, I now have a voice to assign to the text when I read Paco's posts! haha

You should hear me talk! Even the penguins make fun of me.

Anyhow, the resistor needs to be a little higher I think, the gauge showed about 40% fuel left when the light came on after using may be a little over 3 gallons, the odometer showed around 125 miles which I think is reasonable considering that was pretty much all street riding (3rd gear or less). On the freeway the light would kick at around 145-150 miles. I will try a 310-330Ohm resistor which should make it more inline with the low fuel light.

Hey Pacomutt!

So i did the mod - EXCELLENT VIDEO BTW - and the needle reads just fine. Before the 270-ohm resistor the needle was almost on empty with 156 miles on the clock. After the mod it went to about 1/4 on the gauge, considering I get about 45 MPG, that is about right (I'm a big guy with a heavy throttle hand).

One thing though, the light comes on around 168 to 170 miles. that means it comes on with about 1.3 gallons left, or around 60 miles. That seems a bit soon to me. Is there any way to change when the light comes on?

Doc

Thanks for the comment on the video. The reserve light sensor is inside the fuel pump. I've heard of it being adjusted, but I don't know how to do it.

You really don,t want to run the gas tank empty. The reason the light comes on so early, is to give you plenty of time to get more gas. The fuel pump is cooled by the extra gas in the tank , when the light comes on. Running completely out of fuel, can damage the fuel pump.
