    Issue solved!

I sent my carb in to ducatiman for examination and testing. He did many things but the thing he thought may be the culprit, which I think was the issue, was that there was a lot of crud around the seal area of the slide diaphragm, which may have prevented a seal.

I finally had time to work on the bike today and so I cleaned the spark plug caps (per ducatiman, although I just used WD40 and Q-Tips until the metal was visible), replaced the spark plugs (DR8EA), charged the battery, washed the K&N air filter, changed the oil and filter (Rotella T6 and Fram), and the bike has never run as smooth.

I was able to ride without any of the previous issues. Used 2nd gear to go 40 mph on local roads. Perhaps I'll try taking it on the highway tomorrow evening. Thanks Ducatiman!
