Curious if anyone on here has made their own pipes before?? I have access to a pipe bender and a welder and I've been thinking about bending a set of pipes for it, just due to the fact I can't see spend $500 for a set. I've got an 09 900 classic, and I'm looking for any info on exhaust diameter or any tips to do it.
Hey man great idea, I think the hardest part would be getting the tight bend at the end where the flange that connects to the motor would be the hardest part. If your going for mainly power I would just take the header part of the stock exhaust and have them run into 1 Pipe with a large radius that has bend almost the same as the tire. Then you would have a very nasty sound and some good gains in power. May have to come up with some kind of system for some slight back pressure though. Best of luck am rather interested. Have made tons of car exhausts but never for a bike I could be way off.
Im really hesitant to make them for this bike, due to the fact that i may need to have it tuned afterwards. I was going to run two separate straight pipes and slightly stagger them like the factory pipes. As far a back pressure Ive made a slip on pipe for my sport bike, to add some back pressure i cut the pipe right down the middle added baffles then welded the pipe back together, it seemed to work great. im debating on whether or not im going to do it on this bike or not. if i do ill be sure to post pictures when im done.
If you're planning on running with ''straight through'' pipes, if your bike has carburetor, you will almost certainly need to re-jet the carbs for 10-15% larger jets. If it is fuel injection, fitting a power commander or similar will compensate.
these were once straight pipes bought the mufflers at a local bike shop for 10 bucks each and 3' of harley pipe with lots of bends about 3 hrs of cutting and welding (covered mostly by stock chrome covers) it sounds great (also made the mount bracket)
I built this set of pipes for my chopper. I had a set of straight pipes that I cut the first few inches off of the header part of the pipes. Or the first couple inches of the pipes that bolt onto the engine. Then I started adding bits and pieces to them until I got what I wanted.
I recommend after getting everything tacked in place, to use a Tig welder to make the finishing welds. Tig is a lot cleaner weld, and it doesn't splatter like Mig does. Also Tig doesn't warp the metal like Mig does.
Take your time cleaning up the welds using a flap disk and files, then chrome, or powder-coat to your liking. It's a good feeling looking at something you made, rather than purchased and bolted on.
I made a 2-1 set for my 05 800 Classic a few years ago. I got the pipe bent and a 4"x22" exhaust tip from a local muffler shop. Did the final cutting and welding myself. At 1st they were straight, no baffles. After the 1st tip got bent when bike was dropped, I cut off part of the tip that was bent, about 12" and welded on another 4"x22" tip. This created a 2nd chamber in the tips and got a better deeper sound from it. The front pipe is stock along with the rear pipe in the 2nd pic. I cut the rear pipe from the flange and rotated it forward. These are all pix from 1st doing it.
