Taunting "El Niño" (and other riders)

Well, seems everyone is predicting we have some rain coming this winter to California, just to show we don't buy into all those predictions I convinced Poncho to change his usual fall trip and come do a few miles around the Golden State.

We're setting to jump off last week of October right across the Tijuana Border (Chula Vista really but Tijuana sounds more exotic to most on the 4m) and do a good mix of driving up the coast (mostly H101 and Cabrillo Hwy) all the way to Monterrey b4 turning toward the Mountains, counting on the weather cooperating and going up to Yosemite and Sequoia to squezze in a little xtra twisties on the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains.

It's gonna be a great trip to take the beast out for some S'miles, + a couple of night stays on the coast, one in the mountains, one by the lake, it should touch on the epic.

Just in case the weather man is not completely wrong, we'll be taking rain gear (it turn out to be rain avoiding gear in the July trip).

@DR: as it stands, looks like we be staying around Monterrey on Monday Night, driving trough Hollister toward Mariposa and up to Yosemite on Tuesday. Sorry to say we are starting this deal on a Sunday and the first 2 days will be marinating in sea brezze.
Hope you can manage at least a couple of weekdays, we could start off by getting breakfast in Hollister.

BTW, this is roughly the distance of the Baja trip so if we do 7 or 8 days in that one we'll be able to do some fishing (hear that ZIGs, I'll bet there are some fish on teh gulf with yur name on them).

Found one with Baba Louie + a bear + cat + gorilla, gonna save that for a future ride reference (if the gorilla had a few frekles and the cat was on a vmax), I was looking for one with Quickdraw and a red ***** but a RED Wagon will have to do.

Man that sounds like a dream trip! I'd love to see Yosemite again....haven't been there since the Summer of '86? But the time and money cuts me out of this one. I can't afford to run with you "high rollers" full time.....I'm just a part time roller. LOL!
Now, if I would have won that lottery last night, I would be right there with you! But, it didn't happen. Again.

I do play when it gets big! But I keep taking my tickets to those automated scanners that read them then tell you if you won anything. The scanners I take them to are always broken. They always say the same thing. "not a winner". I can't be that unlucky all the time!

mite wanna take that up with the missus zigg.?

@ Zig + Cooter: The distance on this one is very similar to the Baja Run we're planning for next spring, hope you guys put away some vacation time for that one. Maybe if Zigs starts checking the numbers one by one on his lottery ticket (that's most of the fun right there) he can go to fishing in Baja and hire us to escort him as his bodygards.

@Poncho / Alex:
I went ahead and booked hotels for Yosemite and Sequoia NP, both inside the parks (spendy but reasonable), puts us right in the middle of the forest, great for morning air and some minor hiking, having coffee / breakfast / dinner with a view of nature.

Those were the ones I was worried might not be available and now we can bypass Fresno and go halfway into Sequoia on Tuesday, get an easier ride or cover more miles on Wenesday, might even just stop for lunch at the Lake and spend the night further down the path so we get more balanced s'miles on Thursday.

This sets launch day for Saturday to allow for Alex to join in for 1-3 days depending how big and mean his boss is.

@DR: seems some messages from me to Ponch got lost in spam, we adjusted departure for Sat 24th to allow you to join us (put up with us) for as long as you see possible.

Ah. Here is the proper thread.
See you guys on the 24th of October. In Ventura Kawafornia. I will ride there from home to meet with you. From there will stay on to Monterey, which used to be my usual Sunday ride instead of church, and go on through Hollister (Why are you going to Hollister?) to they dry Yosemite desert. Nope, no waterfalls this time around. All waterfalls are turned off due to water shortage.

#15 ·
Oh dear. Not again.
BTW I got 24th-27th approved. So I will hang out in Yosemite desert.
@Co0terV2K Once you start that Nebraska to Seattle thread, let me know. I will be on it. Provided it is 2016. Pity you are not on this Cali run. I will get to show guys a fish restaurant with lobsters and sea things from local fish-mongers.

#21 ·
warry not. Around here weg "burgers" are in a special section of the menu, clearly entitled "vegetarian". Some places (not many on the coast) also serve vegan stuff. It is even more vegetarian than a vegetarian can be. So just avoid that section of the menu and you will be fine... Coast side it will be fish anyway. Sea Fish and lobsters.

the grizzle bear in me eats most anything. omnivore, but I don't do grass. eat or smoke it.. but if ther is a dead carcass in the vicinity well all bets are off,, hell it don't even have to be dead.. and fish is good stinky stuff too. when Im done eating, I like to roll around my back on the scraps, and let y'all kno watt you been missin.

Finalizing route-waypoints for Tex-Mex ride

Playing around with the details of the route, trying to better balance the day to day rides, allowing for some twisties conbined with more straight sections to let the Beastie stretch her legs some.
The middle days in the mountains more time for walking-hiking a few steps - smelling the Pines (no roses to be found up there).
The thing looks like this:
https://www.google.com.mx/maps/@34....ta=!4m2!6m1!1sz9zYBdMeeK4I.kH4kPIDgktIo?hl=en

Saturday 24th: Departure from Chula Vista to Thousand Oaks; some mountain roads and a little ocean view, trying to go around LA traffic (taking advantage of this being the weekend). 300+ mi, 7hrs. ride time.

Sunday 25th: Thousand Oaks to Monterrey; all coastal ride, still pending reservation. 295 mi. 6:25 ride time.

Monday 26th: Monterrey to Yosemite; short ride time to ride/walk/hike a little on the Na Park, reservation made on one of the NP Lodges. 210 mi. 4:30 ride time + some riding within the park just to move around.

Tuesday 27th: Yosemite NP to Sequoia NP; Figure we spend a few hours in the park and ride after lunch, easy day ride, enjoy the way down the mountain + scenery, then up the other Mntn + more scenery. 175 mi. 4:25 ride time + walking around time.

Wednesday 28th: Sequoia NP to Tehachapi; Looking to go up to Kings Canyon NP (depending on weather) then come back and drive trough Sequoia NP from north entrance to South entrance on the 3 Rivers area, allowing for multiple stops and taking in the scenery, then Ride trough Lake Isabella area and stretch tha day a little to ease up on the miles for last day. 250 mi. 6:00 hrs. ride time.

Thursday 29th: Tehachapi to Chula Vista; More going around the traffic on the LA area, plan to go trough the San Bernardino/ San Jacinto mountain roads for more scenery and vistas. 315 mi. 6:30 ride time, already put in the scenic route so it can be shorten by puting in some slab miles.

On most day there are some sections we can bypass to shorten miles but looks to be well balanced as it is /relaxed rides.

Can't Wait, less than 3 weeks left for launch date.

I will meet up with you on Saturday 24th Somewhere around Ventura or Santa Barbara or Thousand Oaks. That's about 6 hour ride for me. Will hang around till 27th. Split off on 27th heading back west to WC. (yes it is). E-mail me the point at which we will meet.

I see we will be passing town called "Carmel-by-the-sea". Where Clint Eastwood was a mayor at one point. Just before that town there is a pretty little state park called Point Lobos (or "Wolf's Point" in language of Anglo-Saxons) you can take some pictures at. On our way to Carmel-by-the-sea there is a Sushi restaurant right on the coast. I love sushi, but Ponch might not fancy raw fishies. Otherwise there are spectacularly overpriced fish restaurants in Monterey. But at least some of them serve local fish.

Than I see you are going to Hollister. What in the name of all that is holy takes you there? Well at least we can stop at Corbin's for a meal in a bikery bar setting. You get to eat sitting on a corbin saddle. Unless you prefer a speatburger at McDoodles. Or there is a bar in tow, but it is full of Hardly Davidson riders. I do not want Ponch to start a riot and become a statistic in the process.

Once we get away from the liberal coast and into red-blooded valley we will have meat. This is where they make happy California cows. There is a place called "Espana's Southwest Bar and Grill", we can get a proper stake there. Made with real meat, not tofu.

Looking forward to seeing you two!

I don't eat bait... ive eaten enuff schitt in my life to kno better than eat raw skraps that even the birds reject.. and they eat some perty nasty schitt.. no thank you, please don't even go there.
As for hardley bars, I don't even care for coffee joints where there are 3 or more them dirtbaggers parked outside. they behave like a pack of wolves and the more of them the more aggessive they become. so you would do well to just avoid any such establishment just survey the parking lot.

Not that I don't like to eat and all that, but I am on vacation and eating is not my top priority.. its not like this is a poker run from restrant to restrant.. a little pie shop wont hurt none tho.?

I'm sure we will find all kinds of veggie burger restaurants full of HD's dripin' oil all over the parking lot up the coast, but only on the weekend and along the coast.
The ride trough Hollister was put there just cus it was there, no special interest at all.
I checked the weather again (had done only a quick check) and it all seem to be looking like perfect riding conditions, some afternoon fog in the coast, part of the ambiance, chilly nights in the mountains and that's it.
Will be more certain once we are closer to that launch date.

Don't worry Ponch. I hear they really like salads out there...like every meal all day salads. They even have bars for salad lovers; called "Salad Bars".
But hey, I'm just chiming in...this is y'all strip.
Remember that big ole burger at Oark? Real beef and all?
Might want to grab a big ole bag of beef jerky before you head out:+1::grinning:

Poncho, you are taking the Guster this time? No?
el mooselini is the back up for this trip.. normally the ***** is up for rotation and would serve long distance duty if I twas riding anywhere. butt this go around I am truking a sled from Tx to Ca.. so have been prepping el Pepe my old roadstar. it has been sitting a long while and needs to have her wheels spun. I put bags n shield on her las weekend, am riding it most days to wring it out. If I don't encounter any problems, Pepe will carry this Pacific Coast run..
it is still up for sale and could get taken off the truck at any moment. then the Goose, el mooselini would take its place..
next year if its still here, Pepe will do the Baja burn.. or not? poncho

Countdown begins, Ponch leaving Texas 2 days earlier but official launch's the 24th.
12 days to go.
Checked weather and it all seem to be in sync, a little chilly in Yosemite Sam's home but other than that we should be OK.
At the end of this week we will be able to get more accurate forecast and not just projections.
Gotta start packing soon.

one nite of chanman snoring and you running skeared?.. or mebbe that was me.?
dialin in that v17. ordered a roll bar for her today. gotta have one.

Needed to post this here, where it belongs. Just ordered a new helmet (still a shotr one but with a neck curtain) to be better equipped for the cold, just in case.
A new set of boots was also in order cus during the summer ride storms my feet got a little wet and I can't have that on a "so close to winter" run.
I am changin' the beastie to the MC tire this weekend, have it already mounted on the spare wheel.
I need to start packing and try to go as light as possible. I will try to do with only the hard bags and a small tank bag but the pile still says otherwise. Don't really want to install the cc bar for the big bag.
