Oil capacity question

I have an 06 vulcan 500. on page 9 in the owners manual it states the oil capacity is (3.6) us quarts. On page 71 it states capacity is (3.0) us quarts when filter is not removed and (3.2) us quarts when filter is removed. Question what does your manual read. Thanks for any replies.

I had the same quandry when it came to what I read in the manuals. I wind up putting in 3 qts and 7 ounces whenever I change my filter. Hope this helps.

I believe about 3.2 quarts with filter change is the correct amount, but it really depends on how much oil you're able to drain. I'd say start by putting 3 quarts and then start the engine, run it for a little. Shut off and then check the oil level.

I'm going to guess that the larger capacity (3.6 qts) is a totally dry bike. Whereas 3.2 US quarts = 3.0 Liters is for a drained bike with filter change. Just be sure to not confuse liters with quarts as you might overfill the bike (don't ask how I know this). Tom

Tom, since you said no to ask....I gota ask. Just being a smart a**.

I just double checked myself about quart to liter conversion, and .2qts = 6.4ounces.

It sure does get confusing!!!

quarts vs liters

Okay, if you are stomping around the bike after reading the manual diligently, and you fixate on 3.2 and you put in 3.2 liters and then you look at the oil view window and see that its full of oil - you have a moment of dispair. I tried to pull a little bit out of the fill port with a vacuum plunger, but to no avail so the only way was to loosen the oil drain plug and let the appropriate amount drip out into a pan beneath the bike. It probably was alright , but I sure wouldn't want to blow rings or ??? for having not enought space for things to move. Liters are bigger than quarts and don't you forget it. Tom

I guess I screwed up in my earlier post about quart to liter conversion. I should have stated that the conversion was from quarts to ounces. I meant to say that I put in 3.2 quarts (not liters). What I was driving at was I put in 3 quarts plus 6 to 7 ounces with a new filter. Sorry about the confusion.

1/2 to 3/4 full.Is there no full mark beside the window? On my 454 there is a lower & upper mark on the case beside the window.

If at first you do succeed, try not to look surprised!

I didn't see a mark, but I could easily have not been looking for it. I could have assumed to just fill 'er up. Oops.
