Can anyone suggest good cleaning solutions for rubber marks on the exhaust left by riding boots?
I've got some pretty stubborn marks that I am having a great deal of difficulty removing.
I tried "000" steel wool and found it works great. Leaves no scratches whatsoever on the chrome. Don't use steel wool more coarse than that or you will have permanent scratches.
Cool advice...+1...oven cleaner and 000 steel wool and keep cleaner off paint. Might try Goo Gone "dissolver" as alternative to oven cleaner but likely would work more slowly but won't hurt paint.
Use a razor. I just did this exact same thing. Worked flawlessly. If you're worried about scratches you can use a brass brush. Brass is a soft metal so it won't scratch.
I didn't notice any scratches, but I followed it up with a little bit of Meguiar's metal polish:
(I suggest getting some of this stuff anyway, it works really nicely on the wheels)
+1 on Razor and Steel Wool. I get the bulk off with a Razor and then what's left with steel wool. Naturally, be careful with the razor, you could scratch something!
I've become a bit of a 'pro' at this. My wife does it frequently to her bike.
Boot scuff is fairly easy to remove compared to those thin, plastic grocery store bags. Tough stuff after it's baked on. Have you tried the Mothers Polish on that?
Thanks guys! Lot's of great suggestions that I will give a try this weekend.
I haven't been on top of it, so the rubber marks have been on there for a year now. Looking forward to finally having clear exhausts again!
You really should try the Mothers stuff first. I couldn't believe how well it worked for melted-boot-on-chrome. Good luck.
